Due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases, the government decided on Friday not only to extend the quarantine one more month until the beginning of May, but also to reintroduce restrictions on movement between municipalities in Lithuania during the Easter period, from Saturday to 6 of April.

The Commissioner General of the Police, Renatas Požėla, announced that the checkpoints will be reinstated at all the entrances of the municipalities and that, if there are suspicions, people will be able to be controlled in the municipality itself.

“Taking into account the decisions taken today, the police once again reorganize their activities. Basically, there is nothing new for us, and probably not something very new for the Lithuanian population either. Simply, given the current situation, the checkpoints, both mobile and stationary, are returning to all accesses to the municipalities.

The police are mobilizing again and it is possible that people will be searched in the municipality itself if there is suspicion that the person comes from another municipality, violating the established procedure, ”reported R. Požėla.

The Commissioner General of Police suggests that residents consult with officials prior to travel.

“I appeal to all residents to ask for conscience, and if anyone really needs to go, if there are any questions about the legality of the trip, then the police number has been made public and please call and inquire – to find out immediately whether legal or not, “he urged.

“And if people go and are detained, only those problems will be dealt with at the checkpoints,” he added.

Will pay close attention to youth gathering places

According to him, special attention will be paid to tourist municipalities and meetings in public places, especially where young people like to meet.

“We are seeing trends that people still behave irresponsibly in public places, especially when it comes to young people. Attention will be paid to supermarkets and other places,” warned the General Commissioner of Police.

At the same time, R. Požėla noted that more monitoring will be carried out in response to reports of meetings and parties taking place in private spaces. “The police will come and go only when we are sure the party is over. And of course, (will appear in the list – past auto.) protocols for all party participants, “explained R. Požėla.

Will it only punish abusers?

According to the General Commissioner of Police, circulation in the municipalities of the ring will not be restricted.

“The city and the district municipality are considered a single unit. The police will not control the flows between the municipality of the ring, the city and the district, they will be concentrated in the border of the municipality of the ring with another municipality, ”he said.

R. Požėla emphasized that this will require a lot of capacity. Earlier this week, police officers will try to take care of themselves with an additional burden, but during the festive period they will turn to the social partners, both internal affairs and military structures, for help.

“We will try to resolve the issues in good faith, explaining to people and simply not allowing them to continue. And if there is still malice in those situations, people’s attempts to abuse and deceive will have to be subject to a policy of administrative penalties,” he said. .
