On Thursday, the Seimas approved by secret ballot the appointment of the director of the Center for Human Rights, lawyer Biruta Sabatauskaitė, as the new Ombudsman for Equal Opportunities.
This quote is also a sign for the LGBT community: although I do not comment on my private life, I have always openly said that I live with a partner.
I believe that the day will come when, when appointing a person to one position or another, they will not be able to carry out activities due to their disability, nor will they be able to reconcile work and family, and sexual orientation or gender identity will not be relevant and they will no longer have to be answered, wrote B. Sabatauskaitė.
This is how he responded to a response from several members of the Seimas in the Seimas Hall on Thursday.
Mindaugas Puidokas, a member of the Seimas from the Seimas rostrum, stated that he had received complaints from unidentified organizations regarding the candidate for Ombudsman for Equal Opportunities.
“I have no doubt about the candidate’s legal expertise and knowledge. I have yet to be part of the public voice. A group of organizations approached the Seimas members and asked them not to agree with the appointment of B. Sabatauskaitė as Ombudsman for Equal Opportunities.
Personally, I have also received similar calls in which organizations and active citizens express serious concerns, arguing that only a group of people will be represented at most, ”said M. Puidokas in the Seimas on Thursday.
According to her, her letters indicate that, while working at the Center for Human Rights, B. Sabatauskaitė “was more active in the field of LGBTQ needs.”
“Finally, information was provided from the public space about the possible marriage of the applicant with a person of the same sex abroad in 2015. There are certain doubts that the candidate herself has not cleared up until now.
Information posted in the public domain may be incorrect. But I believe that we must demand openness and transparency from the highest state officials to know if their actions are always legitimate, ”said M. Puidokas.
He urged his fellow MPs to abstain or not support the candidacy of B. Sabatauskaitė.
The peasant Valius Ąžuolas also suggested not to support the candidacy of B. Sabatauskaitė.
“We have received many arguments from the public about why this candidate is not suitable for this position and what will happen if this candidate is appointed to this position. It will stand up for equal opportunity for all, especially gays and lesbians, so we cannot claim it, ”said V. Oak.
Petras Gražulis, representative of the Mixed Group of Members of the Seimas, stated that B. Sabatauskaitė was “engaged in public space as a defender of homosexual people, he participated very actively in various events where homosexuality was promoted.”
