Before the plenary session of the Seimas, V.Čmilytė-Nielsen told reporters to ensure that B. Sabatauskaitė will be appointed director of the Office of the Ombudsman for Equal Opportunities.

The Speaker of Parliament reiterated that the non-governmental woman nominated for the candidates is one of the best experts on human rights in Lithuania, she has the support of more than 100 non-governmental organizations and human rights defenders.

Despite this support, V. Čmilytė-Nielsen pointed out that the members of the Seimas also received “hundreds of standard letters”, which, on the contrary, asked to vote against the candidacy of B. Sabatauskaitė. It is alleged that several organizations have requested it, but mostly citizens.

“It is natural, opinions differ, but I hope that the members of the Seimas look at the experience of this candidate, his enthusiasm for working in the field of human rights and appreciate it,” he said.

The future leader of the opposition of the Seimas, Saulius Skvernelis, said that members of the parliamentary faction of “peasants” would vote freely for the candidacy of B. Sabatauskaitė. He himself did not reveal how he would behave.

“I will definitely vote according to conscience,” said the future opposition leader of Seimas.

According to S. Skvernelis, the competence and education of the candidate are suitable for the position of ombudsman for equal opportunities. However, the Lithuanian Green and Peasant Union faction in the Seimas had different views on this.

He himself has doubts about the possible appearance of certain conflicts of interest.

“I would quote the former opposition leader of my time, the esteemed J. Sabatauskas, who spoke on these issues,” S. Skvernelis told reporters.

According to him, J. Sabatauskas is one of the leaders of the parliamentary faction, whose daughter is running for such positions.

J. Sabatauskas, vice president of Seimas, replied: “What should I do for myself?”

Radvilė Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė, the eldest of the largest ruling faction of the Seimas – the Lithuanian Christian National-Democratic Union – stated that during the meeting B. Sabatauskaitė left the impression of a person with the necessary competencies in human rights in a broad sense.

However, R. Morkūnaitė-Mikulėnienė did not hide that some conservatives have a different opinion about the candidate and will vote against it.
