The newsroom received a public letter from the publicist Arūnas Rimkus, in which he spoke categorically against the candidacy of B. Sabatauskaitė:
“I am convinced that the Office of the Ombudsman for Equal Opportunities must take proportionate care not to discriminate between different groups of people and guarantee equal rights.
I am concerned that Ms. Sabatauskaitė is biased towards specific groups of people, which is reflected in her public speeches and in the activities of the long-standing Lithuanian Center for Human Rights.
We believe that it will not adequately represent all groups of people and that the majority of the Lithuanian population will suffer discrimination. The recommendations of the Ombudsman for Equal Opportunities for the development of curricula and educational textbooks disturb families and are concerning. Therefore, do not approve the candidacy of B. Sabatauskaitė “, it is written in the direction of the Seimas.
A. Rimkus attached to his letter a couple of extracts from the centre’s recommendations, which, among other things, suggest “a more frequent reflection of LGBT + people on texts or tasks” and “include texts and videos that reflect the experiences of LGBT + people “in the learning material prepared for students.
It is interesting that some members of the Seimas do not support the candidacy of B. Sabatauskaitė. Suppose Arvydas Nekrošius on March 18. He publicly analyzed the probable circumstances of such an appointment on his personal Facebook account on the social network:
“Today at the Seimas we discussed the candidacy of Birutė Sabatauskaitė (daughter of the Seimas member, Vice President Julius Sabatauskas) for the Ombudsman for Equal Opportunities.
Rumors are circulating about the possible exchange of positions at the Seimas. I wanted clarity in this case, but I ran out of time to ask questions … Then the questions will be public, maybe the media will also be interested?
It is rumored that when the candidate leaves for a new post, the son of another high-ranking member of the Social Democratic Party (Gediminas Andriukaitis) could possibly run for his current post (director of the Lithuanian Center for Human Rights). I wanted to hear the denial.
I also wanted to ask the president of the Seimas: should the Social Democratic faction not resign on this issue, because the candidate’s father holds a high position in the Seimas and could possibly influence his faction colleagues to make one or another decision? the vote on the appointment of B. Sabatauskaitė as Ombudsman for Equal Opportunities should take place this week.
