The two factions of the Seimas agreed to cooperate to coordinate the common positions of the factions, draft laws and agendas, exercise parliamentary control, defend and protect the rights of the opposition in the Seimas and organize coordination meetings before the plenary sessions.

According to the agreement, the positions of leader of the opposition will be held alternately by the representatives of both factions: five sessions of the Seimas will belong to the “peasant”, three – to the “employee”.

S.Skvernelis will become the leader

Aušrinė Norkienė, the eldest of the “Peasants” faction, announced that the first position of opposition leader would belong to his faction.

“We had the only candidate, Saulius Skvernelis,” he said.

According to the old man, this candidacy will be approved in the near future.

The coalition partners agreed to cooperate in the opposition of the Seimas, hold coordination meetings, coordinate the common positions of the factions, draft laws, agendas, exercise parliamentary control, and defend and protect the rights of the opposition in the Seimas.

The opposition Lithuanian Green and Peasant Union has 32 MPs in the Seimas, and the Labor Party has ten.

The Statute of the Seimas stipulates that if an opposition faction or its coalition has more than half of the parliamentarians belonging to a minority of the Seimas, the largest of that faction or the leader of the coalition is called the leader of the Seimas opposition.

A minority in this Seimas is made up of 68 MPs. Besides the two factions, it also includes the Social Democratic Party faction and the Mixed Seimas group.

Peasant leader Ramūnas Karbauskis has already said that the party’s faction led by him in the Seimas will nominate former Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis to the positions of rotating opposition leader.

This agreement was signed by the senior of the LVŽS Aušrinė Norkienė faction and the senior of the Labor Party Vigilijus Jukna faction.

“Our objective is to counteract the political majority, because we see that their initiatives divide society, which must be united, not divided,” said the peasant A. Norkienė, adding that the agreement is open and if there are those who want to join, other groups opposition could do it.

The opposition Social Democrats of the Seimas do not yet have the intention of signing a cooperation agreement. According to them, the possibility of cooperating with the opposition in choosing a new party leader will be considered.

I didn’t want to be a shadow prime minister

Former Prime Minister S. Skvernelis will be in the government in the shadow of the opposition Lithuanian Peasants and Greens Union (LVŽS) formed by Ramūnas Karbauskis.

In February, it was announced in the Seimas that the chairman of the party R. Karbauskis had assumed the leadership of the shadow government formed by the LVŽS, and the former prime minister of this party, S.Pvvernelis, was left without office. . It is true that S. Skvernel later claimed that he himself made that decision.

“A pilot who has been flying a real plane for many hours, sitting in the simulator does not feel any pleasure, emotion or interest”, this time the political scientist Saulius Spurga described the situation to the lrytas.lt portal.

R. Karbauskis: “It is difficult for me to imagine an agreement between parties”

Although the agreement between the factions has been signed, it may not mean greater friendship between the parties themselves. R. Karbauskis has previously expressed a critical opinion about the intentions of Labor Party founder Viktoras Uspakych to sell water that protects against the COVID-19 virus.

“The agreement should not be between parties, but between factions. It is difficult for me to imagine it between the parties at the moment, because in fact some of the actions of the chairman of the Labor Party are difficult to understand at the moment. Consequently, as chairman of the party , I could not sign a document with the president of the Labor Party, whose conduct raises many doubts, “said the peasant leader.
