President appoints Gediminas Šimkus as Governor of the Bank of Lithuania

G.Šimkus started working at the Bank of Lithuania in 2002 and during the eighteen years of work at this institution he has steadily moved up the career ladder.

President G. Nausėda described the candidate as an excellent economic and financial expert with many years of experience working at the Bank of Lithuania.

In 2002, the candidate for chairman of the board of directors of the Bank of Lithuania graduated from Vilnius University with a master’s degree in economics. From 2002 to 2010, G.Šimkus worked at the Bank of Lithuania, initially in the Financial Performance Evaluation Division of the Bank’s Credit Institutions Supervision Department, then in the Financial Stability Division of the Economics Department.

In 2010-2012, G.Šimkus was a financial stability expert at the Financial Stability Directorate of the European Central Bank, returned to the Bank of Lithuania in 2012, worked as Director of the Economic and Financial Stability Service since 2014, represented the Bank of Lithuania on the Advisory Committee of the European Systemic Risk Board and on the Financial Stability Committee of the ECB.

On August 25 last year, the president appointed G. Šimkus to the board of directors of the Bank of Lithuania. In this role, he supervised the Banking Authority and the Financial Stability Department, and was an alternate member of the General Council of the ECB, the General Board of the European Systemic Risk Board, the Joint Resolution Board and the EBA Resolution Committee ( ResCo). .

The mandate of the Governor of the Central Bank shall be five years.

Together with the European Central Bank, the Bank of Lithuania seeks to maintain price stability in the euro area, take care of the stability of the financial system, carry out economic analysis and issue euro banknotes and coins.
