Algirdas Sysas, the eldest of the Lithuanian Social Democratic Party faction, notes that L. Kasčiūnas systematically uses his position as chairman of the committee to “spread” messages that are incompatible with Lithuania’s commitments to the principles of equality, non-discrimination and diversity. .

“He has never hidden his hostility towards the fundamental provisions of NATO and other Lithuanian partners on non-discrimination and diversity. L. Kasčiūnas has repeatedly called these attitudes ideology and manipulation,” A. Sysas notes in the press release.

According to him, since L. Kasčiūnas, lawyers and public figures working in the field of human rights, especially those who specialize in LGBT rights, are constantly hampered: he constantly reiterates that his “worldview”, “ideology” and commitment with the communities is an obstacle for them to occupy positions of responsibility. “In the television report that was shown yesterday, L. Kasčiūnas again shot arrows at human rights defenders and spoke of” narrow ideological lenses. “But, of course, he does not see his own glasses”, ironically the elderly Social Democrat .

He wonders if a politician who does not accept the democratic provisions of the North Atlantic Defense Alliance and other strategic partners can in principle lead the Defense and National Security Committee.

“Every day of his tenure in this post, this politician damages not only Lithuania’s international reputation, but also the country’s opportunities to strengthen its positions and authority in the strategic structures of Western countries,” says the Social Democrat.

The Social Democrats point out that in all its documents, NATO has established a strict prohibition of discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, gender, race, ethnic origin, religion, nationality, disability or age.
