Born in Tajikistan but now living in Russia, the 29-year-old singer, often referred to only as Maniza, is also a refugee and women’s rights activist.
The Serious Crimes Investigation Commission said it had received a request from a non-governmental organization to investigate the Maniza song about “potentially illegal statements.”
Svetlana Petrenko, a spokeswoman for the investigation committee, told RIA Novosti news agency that the request would be processed in accordance with the law.
The Russian Orthodox Women’s Union issued an open letter on Thursday calling for a ban on the Maniza song clip and forbidding her from participating in Eurovision.
The letter says the song’s lyrics incite “hatred of men, which undermines the foundations of the traditional family.”
Earlier this week, the Veterans Vesti website for war veterans issued an open letter to Alexander Bastrykin, head of the Investigation Committee, asking him to initiate criminal proceedings over the song.
The organization calls itself independent, but is a partner of the Department of the Interior, the Department of Defense and the Federal Security Service (FSB).
In the letter, she said she believed the Maniza song “is intended to seriously offend and degrade the human dignity of Russian women.”
