Speaking on the sidelines of an event to mark the seventh anniversary of Russia’s annexation of Crimea, Putin invited Biden for a “live broadcast” or online discussion in the coming days.
“I want to invite President Biden to continue our debate, but on the condition that we do it in live practice, as they say, onlinePutin said in a televised speech. The Kremlin leader hinted that such a conversation could take place on Friday or Monday.
According to Putin, it would be a “direct open discussion” and it would be “interesting” to the people of both Russia and the United States.
In an interview with ABC News on Wednesday, Biden was asked if he thought Putin, who was accused by many of ordering the poisoning of opposition figure Alexei Navalna, could be described as a “murderer.”
Biden replied, “Yes.”
This and other comments by the US president prompted Russia to call its Washington ambassador later on Wednesday for “consultations.” Such a move is unprecedented in the recent history of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Earlier on Thursday, Putin scoffed at the US leader’s remarks, citing kindergarteners as “whoever says something else speaks for himself” and wished 78-year-old Biden “cheers.”
