On Wednesday, the Lithuanian Basketball Federation (LKF) reached a cooperation agreement with its German colleagues and signed a formal agreement.
From the first round of 2015, the organizing parties have the opportunity to choose a team that they would like to host. In 2017, Lithuania received such an invitation from Israel and played the group’s match in Tel Aviv.
The goal is mutual benefit: attract as many fans as possible, increase ticket sales, carry out other projects related to the championship and strengthen the partnership between the federations.
If FIBA approves this deal, Lithuania would automatically look for the first competitor in the European Championship: it would become the German team, which the Lithuanians would face at the Lanxess Stadium in September next year.
“We are pleased to work closely with the German Basketball Federation and the agreement reached. Both parties have found common ground, they want to create a good show for the spectators and provide excellent conditions for the teams. We believe that it will also be convenient and economical for fans go to Germany to support the national team, and looking positively at future battles, the route will also be comfortable, as the final championship fights will take place in Berlin.
“We quickly agreed with our Lithuanian colleagues that cooperation would be beneficial to both parties. We expect FIBA to confirm our agreement on Friday, “added Wolfgang Brenscheidt, Secretary General of the German Basketball Federation.
The European Championship draw ceremony will take place on April 29. The championships will take place from September 1 to 18 next year in Germany, the Czech Republic, Italy and Georgia.
We remind you that Darius Maskoliūnas’ students barely made it to the last stage with a disability, beating the Danes in selection group C, but losing the Belgians.
In addition to the competition, the German team, which participated in the classification, remained in the last quarter in Group G (1/5).
The roads of Lithuania and Germany crossed in the last European Championship. Then, in the group competition, the team led by Dainius Adomaitis won the match 89:72.
Lithuania ranks 8th in the FIBA ranking, Germany ranks 17th.
