This idea was expressed at a meeting of the Rural Affairs Commission on Wednesday, where the situation in the poultry, meat and crops sectors was discussed.
The peasant Giedrius Surplys suggested remembering the lessons of Smetonic’s time.
“In Smetona Lithuania, we all remember the chicken crisis. Officials, members of the Seimas could buy that Lithuanian product or receive a salary in part, with birds, for example,” he said.
Viktoras Pranckietis, a member of the Liberal Movement faction, former peasant and president of the Seimas, also believes that the country’s producers should not be supported only by government subsidies, the population should also contribute to this by consuming Lithuanian products.
“We must encourage the Lithuanian population to choose Lithuanian products anyway, thus ensuring higher production here in Lithuania. Perhaps even through public space we need to communicate more with people so that they understand that supporting our producer is not only a government subsidy, but also the consumption of our products, ”the politician told the commission.
In the fall of 2018, when the peasant government planned to reduce food prices and increase competition in the retail market, then-Agriculture Minister G. Surplys initiated so-called food coupons or vouchers to support small farmers, but the idea was not implemented. .
