The Presidency informed some members of the Seimas of such intentions, BNS informed three informed sources on Tuesday.
The president’s representatives and G. Šimkus himself declined to comment to BNS on the candidacy.
According to the Constitution, the President submits to the Seimas for approval the candidacy of the Chairman of the Board of the Bank of Lithuania.
The term of the current central bank director, Vito Vasiliauskas, ends on April 7.
G. Šimkus started working at the Bank of Lithuania in 2002. And over the course of eighteen years of work at this institution, he has been moving up the ladder of his career. He has been a member of the board since September of last year.
Before joining G. Nausėda’s team, S. Krėpšta also worked at the Bank of Lithuania for 11 years. In an interview with Verslo žinios in January, G. Nausėda said that S. Krėpšta could be “one of the serious candidates” to head the central bank.
Conservative Mykolas Majauskas, chairman of the Seimas Budget and Finance Committee, says that when deciding on candidates, it will be important to assess their visions and work priorities.
“I would like to evaluate not the names, but the vision, priorities and even the specific work of the proposed candidate that he intends to do as governor of the Central Bank of Lithuania. The public should know about this and the members of the Seimas would help decide this before to make a responsible decision, ”M. Majauskas told BNS.
