In 2018, the Panevėžys City Council announced an open competition to select the best architectural idea for the Stasys Eidrigevičius Arts Center. The competition was won by the IMPLMNT team of architects. According to his representative, the sympathy for the work of the artist Stasys Eidrigevičius and a professionally prepared contest encouraged him to participate in the contest.
“Exhibition architecture, galleries, museums are our field of activity, therefore in an architectural sense it is our field. Among the authors of the project are the residents of Panevėžys, so this fact strengthened the desire to submit an idea to the competition.
We are enthusiasts of architecture competitions, and this competition was distinguished by its professionalism, even before its call, architecture workshops were held, public opinion was investigated, the context was analyzed and the conditions of the competition were created based on these factors . It was like it did in the countries with which we have to compare ourselves in terms of the quality of architectural development, ”says A. Syrus.
Architectural idea – in three words
According to the architect, the most important axis of the architectural idea became three words: simplicity, logic, fantasy.
“The artist S. Eidrigevičius mentioned these three keywords in his letter to the architects participating in the competition; such, in his opinion, should be the new SEMC. Although the building is designed logically and simply, it contains certain elements that encode fantasy.
There are elements in the sufficiently laconic form and structure of the building that emerged from the analysis of the work of S. Eidrigevičius. In the artist’s work we notice the reasons for the transformation of forms and the continuity of lines. The building will have two large windows, as if open from the building’s façade, as well as a long and expressive main staircase, as the line that leads to the exhibition spaces.
As this place is an important non-commercial cinema space, next to the main volume of the SEMC building, we designed a separate cinema building, which becomes the most important object of the public space and therefore marks this place as a space. of cinematographic culture. ”Says A. Syrus.
SEMC spaces – for all kinds of art
SEMC is a system of public and internal spaces. The team of architects designed the public spaces on the south and north sides of the building so that art and the city meet here.
“Another very important public space is the roof of the building. Visitors to the center will have access to an outdoor terrace and panoramic views of the city. The artist S. Eidrigevičius has shown a sketch of the type of art object that you would see on the roof of the building: a large cone that protrudes upwards. I hope that some exhibitions can implement this “, says A. Syrus
SEMC’s interior spaces are planned following global trends in multifunctional arts centers.
“There will be an information center, an art center store and a cafeteria in the common areas. In a separate building there is a non-commercial cinema room, and in the basement of the building – an art storage, archive, workshops – a universal room on two floors.
On the second floor there will be a media library, a conference center, a space for creative workshops, an administration of the center and, most importantly, the two upper floors will be dedicated to exhibitions, a permanent exhibition of the works of S. Eidrigevičius. and changing exhibitions ”, the architect presents.
According to A. Syrus, art has been breaking the boundaries of disciplines for some time, so the contemporary art center should be a suitable space for a wide range of art forms.
“The most important thing for a modern art center is multifunctionality, not only the variety of premises, but also the possibility of transforming them. Not only internal but also public spaces are important. Such a building should stand out for its extra-versatility and join the city’s system of public spaces, attract and interest the public ”, says A. Syrus.
According to the architect, SEMC will be a really brilliant sign in the architectural context of Panevėžys.
It stands out for its architectural aesthetics
Vidminas Stankevičius, a member of the Panevėžys branch of the Lithuanian Union of Architects and author of the latest reconstruction of the Garsas cinema center, supports the restraint of the SEMC project and its modern and minimalist aesthetic.
“We have to listen to the opinion of the competent architects commission, of all the projects presented to the international competition commission, this one was rated as the best. It is an aesthetic, minimalist, technologically modern project that meets current requirements, it certainly has no architectural expression problems. Remembering all the submitted works, he immediately noticed the correct architectural aesthetics, which is why I support this project, ”said V. Stankevičius.
According to the architect, the appearance of a new artistic center will be much more successful than the renovation of the building.
“Knowing the situation and this object from the architectural-constructive side, I can affirm that a lot of financing is needed for it to continue to exist. That would not be a logical and adequate solution. I support the reconstruction of “Garso” into a multifunctional cultural object. This is a great boost and a necessity for the culture of Panevėžys, “said V. Stankevičius.
