Team driver Vaidotas Paškevičius said after a failed day that the first technical quirks appeared at the start of the speed section. Later, through the windshield, the crew saw smoke coming from the engine compartment, but that wasn’t the biggest problem.
After eliminating this fault, the duo continued the race, but in the second part of the day, what happened eliminated any hope of continuing to fight for the result: the timing belt was missing, which damaged the engine.
“It just came to our knowledge then. From the beginning, something started to happen. The engine shuts it down, it doesn’t pull. Well, going into the first dunes, black smoke started coming out from under the deck. We realized that something It had happened. Turns out the fracture fell off the mounting manifold. It’s this fault that we fixed on our own in about fifteen minutes.
At the end of the first stage we managed to catch many competitors, we overtook many. But then we turned a buggy around and made a big jump. We landed very hard. We replaced the steering column during the service area because it was broken.
Then we head to the second speed section of the day. We drove in the dust, but we really did go back down a lot and gradually regain lost positions. However, the traction in the straight section disappeared. We stopped and saw that the main belt was missing. This meant that there was no possibility to continue driving, ”Vaidotas Paškevičius said of a hellish day in the Sahara desert.

Although the team has already complicated its situation in the fight for a place at the top of the table due to such a breakdown, it is not yet planned to carry the suitcase home. The mechanics promised that Bitė will definitely drive again on the third day of the rally.
“We did not finish today, we are going to receive many fines. But we have parts, the mechanics are serious, we will change the units and jump further. Now we will no longer look for results, but for experience. I’m sorry, but what are you going to do? Here’s a sport technical, ”said Vaidotas Paškevičius.
On the third day of the Phoenix Rally, more than 250 kilometers await the participants. In total, about 1,100 kilometers are expected on Rally Phoenix over the six days of the race.
