According to Remigijus Lipkevičius, Head of the Lithuanian Highway Administration, due to weather conditions, the road construction season in Lithuania lasts much less than 12 months, and the busiest working time usually coincides with the travel season.
“We do everything we can to minimize inconvenience to travelers and vacationers on roads of national importance. We thank the people of the country for their understanding and patience when faced with inconveniences in carrying out major road maintenance and development projects, ”said R. Lipkevičius.
According to the agreements concluded last year, works will continue on the Vilnius-Kaunas road. Work on individual sections has already been completed, but the entire project will be completed in September this year. The main objective of the reconstruction works carried out in this section is to guarantee road safety requirements that meet the conditions of roads of such intensity. Only when the necessary technical and safety requirements are met and when the road meets the requirements applicable to the highway, will it be possible to drive at 130 km / h. speed in summer and 110 km / h. speed in winter.
During the execution of the project of the main highway A1 Vilnius – Kaunas – Klaipėda, on the section from Vilnius to Kaunas, metal protective barriers are being replaced on the dividing road strip, and anti-wild animal net fences are being installed in part of the stretches of road. Acceleration and deceleration lanes are also being rebuilt, sidewalks and crossings are being installed at different levels, speed control and alert systems are being installed, lighting is being installed and other works are being carried out.

The work will continue outside Kaunas according to the project “Reconstruction of the section of the main highway A1 Vilnius – Kaunas – Klaipėda from 102.90 to 107.00 km”. Following the implementation of this project, one of the most dangerous intersections (Giraitė) in the road network of state importance will be eliminated. In addition, on the A1 Vilnius – Kaunas – Klaipėda highway from Kaunas to Klaipėda, ordinary road repair works will be carried out in 8 sections.
This year, the design of the section of the Via Baltica project, the A5 Kaunas – Marijampolė – Suwałki highway from 56.83 to 97.06 km, will continue, and the acquisition of land for public needs is expected to be completed. It is also planned to start preparing pre-design solutions for the next part of Via Baltica, that is, from Kaunas to the border with Latvia (respective sections of the state main roads A8 Panevysžys – Aristava – Sitkūnai and A10 Panevėžys – Pasvalys – Riga).
2021 In the road network of national importance, it is planned to pay more attention to the installation of road safety infrastructure (roundabouts, modern crosswalks, pedestrian and bicycle lanes, etc.) and repairs and reconstruction of bridges. Simple repairs will be made, lighting will be modernized, markings will be renewed, gravel roads will be paved, and other road maintenance and development projects will be carried out.
