Government data analyst: British strain of virus may already be dominant in Vilnius

He said there has been a slight increase in cases in recent days.

“The general situation, if we look at the number of the whole of Lithuania, we are in a similar place to where we were 3-4 weeks ago, when it seemed that the rise was beginning, but in the end it did not turn into a big explosion of cases. That situation has stabilized again. But to this day, the indicators similarly show that we are in a slightly upward phase, ”said A. Šimaitis, an analyst at the government meeting.

He explained that the acceleration of the pandemic is again positive, although small. He said that there is no sustainable trend, there is a rebound in different regions of the country.

“We have been in a negative acceleration phase for a long time, the epidemic is slowing down. Then about a week, we had about a week in which takeoff acceleration was positive. (…) Now we are again in a phase such that it is positive and is rising slightly. There is no sustainable trend, whether we are really growing or really increasing. Now the increase is happening locally, it is happening in the regions. This week, the growth phase appears to be in the eastern region of Lithuania, around Vilnius and its county. We seem to be cheering up a bit, ”said the data analyst.

At the Government meeting, A. Šimaitis stated that the average number of cases in about 20 municipalities in the country is increasing, 30 – decreasing.

But as of Sunday, in up to 35 municipalities, the percentage of positive polls has begun to rise again.

“We are in the wavy stage, it seems that we are saying hello a bit. We are not in the fall stage, “he said.

A government data analyst said that looking at the number of diagnostic tests being carried out, there is no indication that the situation is rapidly getting worse, but there is no indication that it will improve.

The British variety is spreading faster

A. Šimaitis told the Cabinet of Ministers that hospital employment rates differ in municipalities. Although the average number of people hospitalized and in resuscitation is decreasing in Lithuania, in different municipalities these figures are increasing somewhere.

“In Vilnius, the occupancy of inpatient and resuscitation beds is increasing. Last week, extra beds were opened in the Vilnius region. And in Šiauliai, these numbers are decreasing. These regions are very different, “he said.

In an attempt to explain why the situation in the country’s municipalities is so different, A. Šimaitis hinted at different strains of coronavirus.

A. Šimaitis stated that the Lithuanian strain of coronavirus dominates in Lithuania, but the number of cases of the British strain is starting to increase.

“This variety does not dominate in all of Lithuania. But the data sequence is February 20. But if we want to see more quickly the prevalence of the strains, we can see other parameters, such as the dropout of the S parameter gene in a PCR test. , we can see this pretty quickly. If we look at February 20, that percentage was about 20, which was about the size of the British variety in the Vilnius county sequencing data, but we can see that in the last month that percentage has increased to 50, ”said the data analyst.

“This is a very strong correlation between the number of S gene dropouts and the number of British strains. Propagated and between one and a half to twice as lethal,” said a government spokesman.

He also noted that the situation in the counties is very different and, in general, the “Spanish” strain of the virus still dominates in Lithuania.

“Looking at the general situation in Lithuania, we have a sequencing project that the Lithuanian version of the Spanish variety is currently dominant, it has started to spread since the summer and it was the one that dominated the autumn wave, but also the British variety, which now it represents about 15%. of all, but here the data are from February, because the reading of the sequence is delayed for several weeks, and it is probably more advanced now, ”said A. Šimaitis.

He stated that regional clusters can be seen throughout Lithuania.

“We are in such an unstable situation, there is an increase in cases. But it is good that there has not yet been a large explosion of cases, as in other countries due to the quarantine measures applied “, – A. Šimaitis at the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on Monday.

Delphi recalls that Statistics of Lithuania reported that 249 new cases of COVID-19 were detected in the country during the last day, the number of new cases in the last 14 days was 100 thousand; the population reaches 223.2 cases.
