Kaunas “Žalgiris” (19/2) Lithuanian Basketball League (“Betsafe-LKL”) achieved another victory at home by defeating “Šiauliai” (6/18) 96:60 (18:16, 19:20, 31:14, 28:10).
The teams started the match unsuccessfully and, in the middle of the half, Žalgiris led 8: 5. With two minutes remaining, the hosts’ positions strengthened a bit with the successful advance of Paulius Jankūnas, but Justas Furmanavičius responded with a three-point lead: 16:18.
Five points from Eimantas Stankevičius carried Šiauliai forward – 21:18. The visitors were back three minutes before the long break, when Elvar Fridriksson scored on the fast attack – 31:30. Seven seconds before the long break, Lukas Lekavičius again considered the result (37:36), and Šiauliai’s attack prepared during the minute of rest ended in failure.
Žalgiris’ team started the third quarter in a higher gear and after Thomas Walkup, the 3s were broken a bit – 47:40. Marius Grigonis’s free throws gave the hosts a double-digit lead (55:45), and after he repeated this ritual, the gap widened even further: 61:45. Karolis Lukošiūnas ‘3-pointer and L. Lekavičius’ advance closed the fourth – 68:50.
In the fourth quarter, both teams had already settled their affairs by playing reserve five. The Šiauliai giant Jonas Paukštė was also able to stand out from the middle distance, and the people of Žalgiris triumphed with certainty. Steve Vasturia, like Istanbul, tried to score with the match siren, but missed from midfield.
This time, the Kaunas club played without Joffrey Lauvergne, who had an extra break due to a hit pelvis in the match against Istanbul “Anadolu Efes”.
Kaunas residents were also led to victory by M. Grigonis, who shone in the Euroleague, and Martin Geben, who replaced J. Lauvergne, who scored 28 and 25 utility points, respectively. Meanwhile, Rokas Jokubaičius had no match: Žalgiris’ longest player (24 minutes) scored just 2 points (1/6 of two points, 0/3 of three points) and finished with -4 utility points.
In Tuesday’s match, even after a fantastic 20-point span from Eimantas Stankevičius, Žalgiris triumphed confidently – 88:74. The club’s first meeting at the start of the season had even less intrigue: 89:56.
