Vilnius, March 14 (BNS).

The document asked the former minister if, in the performance of his duties, he had received proposals in writing or by email for the appointment of specific individuals to the post of military intelligence commander.

The letter was also asked to indicate the persons who had submitted these offers, if any, and the manner in which they had been submitted, with copies where possible.

In his reply to the chairman of the NSGK, Mr. Karoblis stated that he had already responded to the commission’s questions and had been informed that the examination of the circumstances had been completed.

“During the meeting, I answered all the questions asked by the committee members. I have been informed that the examination of the circumstances relating to the appointment of the Director of the AOTD in the committee that you chair has been completed, ”says BNS.

“The issue of a possible change in the procedures for the appointment of the director of the AOTD is already the responsibility of the current Minister of National Defense,” he said.

The former Minister of National Defense states in a letter that if NSGK resumes examination of the circumstances, it is ready to answer questions from committee members.

Mr. Karoblis also claims that he did not receive any offers in writing or by email. Mail specific people to AOTD executives.

In February, Mr. Karoblis was invited to a closed-door meeting of the NSGC, which also inquired about the circumstances surrounding the appointment of the head of the AOTD.

Following the meeting, R. Karoblis stated that during the appointment of the chief of military intelligence, a “consultation process” was under way with the Presidency, and other names were proposed in place of the designated colonel Elegijus Paulavičius.

“Colonel E. Paulavičius has been appointed Director of AOTD, as required by law. There was a consultation process prior to appointment with the President, Prime Minister and Chairman of the NSGC. I am pleased that this official has been appointed Director of the AOTD, and I think that the AOTD, the Ministry of National Defense and all the existing institutions have been lucky, ”said R. Karoblis.

Darius Kuliešius, the president’s adviser on national security, who attended the NSGC meeting, said the president had not pressured the minister to select his nominee, although he confirmed that the president was informally interested in the process.

The media and various SNB sources said that G. Nausėda had offered his candidates for the post of head of military intelligence. By law, the head of military intelligence is appointed by the Minister of National Defense.

The presidency did not respond to specific questions from the BNS about the president’s role in appointing the intelligence chief, but assured that “the head of the AOTD was selected in accordance with the requirements of applicable law and national security interests.”

At the end of January, LNK News reported that the circumstances of the appointment of the Chief of Military Intelligence may be one of the reasons why Karoblis was not appointed ambassador in Brussels or Washington, as the Presidency could count on his candidate Saulius Guzevičius, a partner. by Darius Jauniškis, Head of the Department of State Security.

The SSD confirmed to the SNB that D. Jauniškis and S. Guzevičius had known each other for several decades and had served together in the Lithuanian Special Operations Forces, but the SSD states that D. Jauniškis “did not attempt or pretend to influence” the process of appointment of a chief of military intelligence.

Mr. Nausėda previously said that he had no objections to Mr. Karobli’s appointments.

He claimed that both Karoblis and former Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius needed a “political cooldown” of their ministerial duties.
