How to understand that a tire explodes while driving and what to do in this case

How do you feel about a tire exploding and what if it happens?

Ignas Klimaika, a tire specialist at Inter Cars Lietuva, says that every tire explosion is dangerous, regardless of the wheel axle on which it occurs. When the front wheel tire blows, you will feel a strong jolt and the steering wheel will spin towards the faulty wheel. The explosion of the rear tire will be felt on the seat. You will notice that the car begins to meander or ride like a slippery surface.

“When a tire explodes, the most important thing is to stay calm: don’t be afraid and take certain measures. Maintain a proper driving position and operate the car with both hands. Do not sit and drive with one hand, as this will slow down the reaction, ”explains I. Klimaika.

It is advisable to slowly take your foot off the accelerator. Do so with caution, as abruptly releasing the pedal can upset the balance of the car. Do not step on the brake pedal. While this is instinctive, this action will only amplify the force pushing the vehicle to one side. When you feel like you can get back into control of the car, slow down a little. If the speed is less than 40-50 kilometers per hour, you can start to brake carefully.

According to I. Klimaika, when the front tire explodes, you can also apply the handbrake. Be very careful and only do this if this brake only works on the rear wheels, as this will transfer some of the load to the rear axles and remove the part from the front.

Why do the tires explode?

Tires can explode while driving for various reasons, but most of the time this happens if they are not used correctly or if they are completely worn. The most common causes of a tire explosion are: driving with too low a tire pressure, driving on a hard or sharp object such as a stone, brick, bottle or metal, driving, tire pressure that exceeds that recommended by the manufacturer, tire defects tire manufacturing.

“To prevent the tire from exploding, never try to inflate the tire immediately after stopping because the air in the tire is hot. When blowing, the pressure gauge readings can be wrong, so it can inflate too much air, ”says I. Klimaika.

In addition, the explosion of a truck or semi-trailer wheel represents a significant risk to the environment. Exploded tire parts are thrown long distances with great force and can sometimes even break the inner floor. It’s best to wait 15-20 minutes for the tires to cool down before trying to inflate them.

How to avoid a tire explosion?

Mindaugas Šerėjus, representative of the Motointegrator.com platform that unites Lithuanian auto repair shops, emphasizes that the ideal is that the tires do not explode. Proper use ensures greater safety and a longer service life. It is not possible to guarantee that this will never happen, but there are some rules to help prevent an unexpected tire blowout.

“Check the air pressure regularly, once a week and before a longer trip is recommended. You should also monitor the pressure in the event of a sudden drop in temperature. The more you drive, the more often you need to monitor the pressure. of the tires, ”says Sherry.

If a tire goes into a deep hole or hits a hard object on the road, check both sides of the tires as soon as possible. Check the sidewalls for lumps (this indicates a tire repeated). Sometimes when the tires on one side of the car pit, the front tire remains intact and the rear tire is damaged.

“Don’t drive on the sidewalks, but if you have no choice, drive as slowly as possible to minimize potential impact. Don’t park the car pressing the tire against the curb. You can fill the tires with nitrogen. This will help reduce shifts in speed. the air pressure caused by the difference between the outside temperature and that of the tires while driving ”, advises M. Šerėjus.
