More than three decades have passed since the days when stormy revival demonstrations brought together thousands of people. Having forgotten the fear that had vanished for many years, the people of Lithuania lived in the hope of Freedom and Independence.

However, not all participants in the rallies were guided by uplifting sentiments. The KGB observed participants in unauthorized demonstrations and meetings. Without interfering with the development of the rallies, the KGB staff recorded the speeches, the content of the posters, recorded the number of participants and took photographs to identify them later. Some of the photos from the various meetings were received by KGB personnel and transmitted by photographers from other people or agencies, such as newspaper editors or ELTA. Over time, the KGB accumulated a large collection of photographs. The most active participants in the rallies were numbered and identified. One can only imagine what would have awaited those people if they had managed to quell the rebirth of the nation …

Lithuania, united in a powerful movement, restored an independent state. He moved out of the palace on Gediminas Avenue in August, and the photos they took and collected remained. It remained to bear witness to history.

We invite you to pause for a moment and look back. Take a look at the photos collected by KGB staff. We are not trying to recreate the chronological sequence of events, we are simply offering to admire the people who were so scared and secretly followed by the KGB. The photos capture ordinary people whose courage and unity helped them win and defend Freedom. Maybe somewhere you recognize a friend, neighbor, brother, yourself …
