During an unexpected eruption, a plume of smoke and ash rose towards the deck. It was raining ash 17 kilometers from the foot of the volcano, Nicaraguan journalist Carolis Altamirano told AFP.

“Everything turned gray: rice, sesame, orchards, fruit trees and pastures were covered with ash,” Altamirano said.

The Institute of Earth Sciences INETER predicted that the volcano will sink in the next few days, and also indicated that there is no danger to the population.

Ashes rushed down hard for about half an hour, and the muffled growl emanating from the volcano scared residents. When the ash cloud darkened the sky, the cars had to turn on the lights.

Local farmers rushed to cover their water sources and herd the animals in safe places. When the ash rain fell, people covered themselves with umbrellas, hats and put on masks, Altamirano said.

At 1,745 meters, San Cristóbal, the highest mountain in Nicaragua, is one of the seven active volcanoes in this Central American country.

It is located in the Chinandega region, 132 km northwest of the capital Managua.
