Thomas Markle told ITV television that Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, “bent the stick” while talking to Oprah Winfrey for two hours, saying they thought a member of the royal family might have asked a “stupid question. “about the skin color of your future baby.
Thomas Markle, 76, a former Emmy-winning film lighting director, interviewed Piers Morgan, one of Meghan’s most outspoken critics, a former tabloid editor, from his home in Mexico.
“They (Harry and Meghan) went too far with these stories for Oprah. They had to wait, given the age of the queen and the age of (prince) Felipe, ”he said, commenting on a talk show on CBS on Sunday.
Harry’s grandmother, Elizabeth II, is 94 years old and her husband, Prince Philip, 99 years old. The latter is currently recovering in hospital after heart surgery.
Thomas Markle didn’t give much thought to Meghan and Harry’s comments that a member of the royal family, whose name they did not name, asked how dark their baby’s skin would be.
“The whole thing about the color (of the skin) and the darkness of the baby is nonsense,” said the man. He is white and Meghan’s mother is black.
“I guess and hope it’s just a stupid question from someone.” I don’t think the British royal family is racist, “he added.
At the same time, the father said he was saddened by his daughter’s story that she was contemplating suicide when she joined the British royal family in 2018.
“If I had known that she had psychological problems, I would have offered to help her,” he said.
However, the father claimed that the daughter had “quite ignored” her family in the United States and “really has nothing to turn to.”
Thomas Markle divorced Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, when the future princess was a child.
Doria Raglan attended her daughter’s wedding at Windsor Castle and the queen invited her for tea, but Meghan cut off all contact with her father shortly after the wedding.
Thomas Markle refused to attend the wedding after the scandal due to posing for the paparazzi, citing upcoming heart surgery as the reason.
“They didn’t care if I died,” he said, but added that he wanted to see Meghan, Harry and their grandson Archie, who now live in California. A year ago, Harry and Meghan decided to leave the royal office.
Meghan won in court in February against the editors of The Mail on Sunday after the publication of her private letter to her father.
He said he published part of the letter because Meghan’s friends were spreading “lies” about him.
People magazine quoted Meghan’s friends as saying that she wrote about loving her father and regretting his behavior.
The part she didn’t post is “terrible,” Thomas Markle said, adding: “She never wrote the word ‘love’ to me.”
Meghan said in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that she tried to protect both her mother and father before the wedding, but felt “betrayed” after learning that he was collaborating with newspapers.
“I’m just trying to decide if I should even talk about it,” he added.
