G. Nausėda’s adviser points out that the head of state of Lithuania is the president, and any attempt to interpret him differently, according to him, leads to non-compliance with the Constitution.
“It is surprising how part of the conservatives want to lower the interests of the states to the level of partisan interests. Supposedly, if the president represented some party, that way we could get more benefits from EVS, etc. It is as if an attempt is being made to raise the independence of the president as Lithuania’s biggest problem, “P. Mačiulis told” Žini radio. “
However, G. Nausėda’s adviser points out that the EVS is not a council of party representatives, but a council of heads of state, and any attempt to interpret it in another way, according to him, leads to unconstitutionality.
“I understand that the parties have their own interests and are constantly striving to fulfill them, but we must not forget that we are talking about the interests of the State here. And it is worth noting that the EVS is not a representative of a party, but a council of heads of state. And according to article 77 of the Constitution, it is the president who is the head of state, ”said P. Mačiulis.
“Therefore, any aspiration that we now hear and our way of interpreting this point or trying to avoid it with various initiatives: legislative resolutions, etc., leads to non-compliance with the Constitution,” he also emphasized.
ELTA recalls that President G. Nausėda stated last week that it is intolerable and unacceptable to ask whether he should continue to represent Lithuania in the EVS, when, according to him, the Government has many unresolved issues regarding the crisis caused by COVID- 19.
Meanwhile, the head of government Ingrida Šimonytė stated that she had discussed with the president the question of greater representation in the EVS. According to the politician, it would be possible to return to the system in Lithuania when the top managers shared the functions of representation in the EVS.
However, the president does not agree with the position expressed by the prime minister. He states that he remains determined to represent Lithuania in EVS. If the Seimas adopted the amendments that regulate the representation in the EVS, the president did not hide the interview in the interview with the LRT television so that without a doubt you veto them.
