This is not the first time that an apartment building that has filled residents with fear of construction defects has been declared safe again.

In Vilnius on Monday night, an apartment building on Gabijos street. 30 residents were evacuated and spent the night in a hotel reserved by the municipality or with relatives. The evacuation began after noticing cracks in the walls of the house.

“An expert who arrived at the event last night conducted a thorough inspection and this morning presented the conclusion of the inspection of the building, which establishes that the house is safe and residents are encouraged to return to their apartments. In other words, the evacuation will be canceled in the near future.

However, we are grateful to the Fire Protection and Rescue Department for its decisive decision: until the presentation of the inspection results, it was necessary to ensure the safety of the residents after leaving the building, ”says Vilnius Deputy Mayor Valdas Benkunskas.

2004 construction of the building house consists of a full reinforced concrete frame and smooth monolithic roofs. The longitudinal frame with the beams protruding under the floor ensures the longitudinal stability of the building. Meanwhile, the interior of the house, and hence the stair walls, are made of silicate brick masonry. The partitions are made of 10 cm thick plasterboard, masonry and plasterboard.

During the inspection, Vytautas Elenbergas, an expert on a building and special project, found that the structures supporting the house were not damaged and that the deformations recorded were local in nature. According to the expert, they are related to the damage of construction technology due to poor installation of floor coverings, as well as the lack of installation of mandatory deformation joints in partitions and other measures.

The stone tiles, the rebounding of which frightened the inhabitants, were glued of poor quality. However, this defect has nothing to do with the deformation of the case. According to the expert, the cracks in the walls are not related to the deformation of the structures, they are observed only in the dividing walls.

The housing manager will inform residents about the possibility of returning home by phone, email, and on the housing manager’s system in the next hour.

After the technical inspection, the Vilnius City Municipality will oblige the multi-apartment building managers to check the cracks, inspect each apartment and assess the current situation, as well as order the examination of the building’s load-bearing structures, determine the causes of cracks. The housing manager must commit to making recommendations on the identified reasons for the liquidation.

Before construction was completed, the house began to fall apart.

The lrytas.lt portal recalls that in 2006 the shop on the ground floor of this residential building was closed due to the defect of this building.

Then the inconvenience began when entrepreneurs began to build an apartment building on top of the Maxima store. It was only after construction started that people began to worry about whether it would be safe to live in such a house: the apartments were built as if they were on poles.

People’s fears quickly materialized. Before construction was completed, the house began to crumble, the Maxima store was immediately closed, and construction on the apartment building stopped.

Its visitors later told reporters that they had seen severely cracked walls inside and that water was coming out through the roof through the rain.

A nine-story building was to be built on the roof of the Maxima. However, when it began to deteriorate, the builders later reduced its height to 7 stories.

Construction stopped suddenly

Only after starting construction, the entrepreneurs successfully sold part of their apartments and offices. However, after a while, the builders informed their clients that they could not guarantee that the multi-story building under construction would be operated safely and offered the clients to terminate the contracts.

In justification, the representatives of the companies assured that they could not continue the construction of departments for technical reasons. The builders quietly began to cancel the contracts with the Vilnius residents who had already booked the apartments.

2006 when journalists visited Gabija Street near said building, he was as dead. The builders pulled out the cranes, the workers were not visible inside the unfinished building.

“We are temporarily closed because the owners of the premises wanted to rebuild the premises. This can take several months. We are only tenants here, ”said the public relations representative of the company that runs the Maxima supermarket chain.

Customers and store staff were the first to notice the cracked walls and alarms began to sound about the construction going on on top.

Brock was called a rumor

The entrepreneurs who built the building called the conversation about a collapsing mall a “buzz level.” Maxima was said to have been shut down because it could not function under construction conditions due to noise and dust.

Employers admitted that some of the walls cracked during construction. But sitting at home is supposed to come naturally.

However, it later became clear that the construction inspectors had demanded that the employers stop construction. This was done by noticing the cracks. The cause of such defects are excessive loads on the structures.

Stasys Šliažas, director of the building management company Tadlita, told the lrytas.lt portal that there had been no concerns about the quality of the building for ten years. According to him, the building was constantly maintained as required by law. The businessman said that the building was also inspected by the fire department, which confirmed that everything was fine.

“The buildings in the store are separate from the buildings in the house. It has nothing to do with the mall. And the building structures have been improved. After adding additional materials, everything was fixed, “said the businessman when asked how the problems that arose during construction were corrected.
