At the end of January, during the construction of the new bridge over the Neris, an accident occurred, during which a worker on the Kaunas bridge was killed. It is not yet clear what caused the tragedy. It is not clear if the bridge structure itself has been damaged and if it will be safe to continue its installation and subsequent operation.
Structural damage
Following the tragic disaster at the construction site of the new bridge, various authorities undertook to investigate the circumstances of the incident. As Aldas Rusevičius, CEO of the Kauno Tiltai company, which built the bridge, mentioned to the newspaper, they hired experts themselves.
“The circumstances of the painful accident at the Kleboniškis construction site at the end of January are currently being investigated. Part of the investigation has already been carried out,” said A. Rusevičius.

He noted that the conclusions about the technical part of the bridge and possible structural damage were already clear. It turned out that the bridge itself was not damaged, but it would be necessary to repair the temporary structures damaged during the disaster, which are necessary for the construction of the bridges.
“The researchers evaluated the bridge structure and found that the main structures, the floor and the supports, were intact. The experts did not detect any displacement or deformation, the building structure corresponds to the calculated design values. During the investigation, violations Temporary equipment for tensile construction were identified.
Construction of the bridge has yet to resume. Next week, only temporary structures are planned. Construction work will only resume once studies have been completed by other institutions.
“The only work that will be carried out in the near future is the removal of the temporary structures that were bent at the time of the incident. The decision to resume the bridge will be made by the competent authorities after considering all the circumstances ”, it is said. It is unclear when bridge construction work will resume at full speed.
Explain the circumstances
The technical state of the new bridge over the Neris has already been evaluated, but the reasons for the severe disaster are not yet known. It is still awaiting conclusions on why the buildings moved and crushed the worker on the day of the disaster.
“The causes of the disaster have not yet been determined. We can only assure that, taking into account the findings of the investigation, we will take all measures to prevent the recurrence of such disasters in the future,” said the head of Kaunas Bridges. .
He noted that additional measures are currently being taken to protect the construction site itself.
In light of the results of the investigations, we will take all measures to prevent such disasters from recurring in the future.
“Depending on the time of year and the start of the glacier, we are taking measures to protect the bridge and the construction site. We constantly monitor the river area around the bridge, use drones and cameras to take appropriate action if necessary. Also successfully use ice-breaking techniques in the riverbed. These mechanisms will remain in place so that we can take immediate action in the event of a real threat, “commented A. Rusevičius.

According to A.Baliukevičius, according to initial data, neither the endless snow nor the air temperature influenced the disaster.
A. Rusevičius, CEO of the Kauno Tiltai construction company, later confirmed that the disaster at the construction site occurred after the bridge scaffold collapsed. We are deeply shocked by the tragedy and express our condolences to the family of the deceased colleague. We will interact with its members, in addition to providing all possible assistance and support to them and other workers affected by the disaster and their families. “Rusevičius.
