Relations between Orban and the center-right group, the European People’s Party, have become increasingly blatant as he tends to be more autocratic, and the alliance has hinted that he will eventually have to be ousted. However, Orban escaped from yesterday’s events by announcing that his Fidesz party was leaving the group.
Membership of the group gave Orban and Fidesz influence and some legitimacy in Europe. This group brings together important conservatives, such as the German Christian Democrats, the French Republicans and the Italian Forza Italia, and is the strongest group in the European Parliament.
The fact that the Hungarian leader no longer has to be protected could make life a bit easier for this center-right group. Some European conservatives have long complained that running for Orban means mentioning his principles and giving him power and what he calls his “illiberal state.”
