Landsbergis: law enforcement must stop threats to the Istanbul Convention

Mr. Lbergberg also emphasized that the convention debate should not be directed at “one person or another” and that law enforcement should, in his view, prevent disputes from escalating into a “civil war.”

“It is understandable that the subject is sensitive, due to the fact that it is sensitive not only in Lithuania, but also in other countries. I am not so surprised by the debate itself. I am concerned about personalities that sometimes turn into a threatening tone with the ones to deal with. This really should be stopped in some cases even by law enforcement, so as not to allow this discussion to accelerate to the point that it becomes a civil war, “Landsbergis told a news conference on Tuesday.

President Gitan Nauseda said on Monday a frustrated discussion and said he will defend the priest Algirdas Toliatas, who had been criticized and insulted “only because he had expressed the official position of the Church.”

At that moment, G. Landsbergis realizes that insults, bitter words and even threats “run perhaps even further towards the Seimas, towards the people who ask questions there, like Mr. Raskevičius”.

He also hopes that the debate in Parliament will unfold in “argumentative language”.

“I would say maybe we should first scale down the issue and first continue the discussion on the content of the question, why does Lithuania need this convention, why does it need to be ratified, what additional protection would it provide to people who don’t have them today?” , He said.

As the Seimas promises to consider ratifying the Istanbul Convention, the debate on this issue has recently intensified in the public sphere. Several Catholic schools are calling for petitions against the ratification of the convention and against the legalization of a gender-neutral association institute.

The convention has been submitted to the Seimas for ratification by former President Dalia Grybauskaitė, but the process has stalled due to political disagreement over some provisions of the document.
