Aloyzas Kuzmarskis, the head of the public institution dealing with the preservation of the ship, which is considered a symbol of Klaipeda, says that due to the quarantine announced by the coronavirus, the usual navigation ceremony will not take place.

However, people from various places in the old town will be able to see the ski lift at 6 p.m. at a safe distance.

“Under current conditions, this raising of sails appears to be taking on additional importance, because we believe it will help inspire more optimism than not only this summer season, but our entire lives will finally return to normal,” Kuzmarskis said in the report. .

According to the organizers, after rescuing the boat from drowning and rebuilding it, the sails will be raised for the seventh time, heralding the start of the summer season.

As usual, the students of the Lithuanian Higher Maritime School will sail.

This year, a new set of sails will float on the legendary ship, which will reproduce the historical map of the Baltic Sea region of 1751, the original of which hangs in the cabin company “Meridiano”.

In total, the Meridian has 14 sails with a total area of more than 600 square meters.

According to A. Kurmarskis, the Meridian was planned to be repaired this spring, but this cannot be done because the Biržai Bridge is not moving properly.

“The fact that Meridian is incarcerated for the problems of erecting the Biržai bridge is really worrying for us, because if necessary, it would not be possible to take urgent measures to stretch the boat to the repair pier, there is a risk of emergencies,” A. Kurzmarskis said.

He hopes to make the necessary repairs available in the fall or before the next season.

Built in Finland in 1948, the Meridianas barrier served for 20 years as a training sailboat for cadets from Klaipeda and other maritime schools.

Since 1971, this sailboat has been docked on the bank of the Dane River in the center of Klaipeda and for more than four decades it has become an integral part of the port city landscape and one of Klaipeda’s most beloved symbols.

In 2012, due to the extremely poor condition of the ship, there was a threat to lose this symbol, but thanks to private initiative and funding, the ship was rebuilt.
