The heritage conservationist discovered that the cultural value is being destroyed a week ago. In the protected area at the foot of the mound, on the right bank of the Akmena, they saw a large excavated well, approximately one meter deep and 40×12 meters wide, the Department of Cultural Heritage reported.

Part of the excavation was filled with gravel, and where this was not done, a cultural layer was seen, molded pottery, clay plaster and burned stones were found.

The Municipality of Šilalė District informed the CRD Tauragė Division and the Šilalė District Police Commissioner of the Tauragė County Chief Police Commissariat about this case. An investigation has been launched.

“We received the notification on June 9. Officers went to the scene, the incident was recorded, and a pre-trial investigation into the destruction or destruction of protected areas or natural heritage sites was launched on June 11,” said Greta Kęsminaitė , Senior Specialist, Communication Division, Tauragė County Chief Police Commissariat.

The allegations have yet to be made to anyone, the circumstances are being clarified.

According to the KPD report, KPD specialists who came to the scene on Monday discovered the settlement at the foot of the mound during further destruction: a bulldozer was stopped at the excavation, and people also arrived with a dump truck. They admitted digging the cultural layer, transporting it and filling the excavations with gravel.

According to preliminary data, the mound was destroyed by people engaged in the black earth trade.

“They knew it was a protected area. They also knew that it was not possible to excavate in that place, – said Jurgita Viršilienė, conservationist of the heritage of the Šilalė district.” Part of this area of the Vedriai mound with a fortress and settlement is their private land, but they know that private land is subject to the same legal requirements and restrictions as archaeological heritage. “

Ričardas Dediala, the lead specialist for the CRD Control Division, noted that this mound with a settlement has the status of a monument, and the level of the item is national. Its valuable feature is precisely the cultural layer.

The law prohibits the destruction or other damage to the valuable properties of a protected object.

“It is clear that a lot of damage has been done to the protected site at this location,” Dediala said in a CRD report.

For such violations, legal entities or other organizations or their divisions are fined from 868 euros to 11 thousand. 584 EUR.

«(…) In such cases, an injury commission will be created. Violators are first fined and then the damage to cultural heritage that violators have to pay is calculated, ”said the CRD specialist.
