By increasing the volume of coronavirus vaccination in Kaunas, Kaunas is opening a second vaccination center. Citizens who have received the vaccination queue are already invited to the new ice palace. It is estimated that at full capacity it will be possible to serve up to 10,000. Kaunas.

New vaccination site

The new ice palace, built next to the Girstutis pool, opens its doors on Friday. It is true that, for the moment, the new facility will not be used to popularize winter sports, but to vaccinate Kaunas residents.

At the beginning of the year, vaccination of Kaunas city residents against COVID-19 infection was started in the former Kaunas Central Post Office building. However, as the scope of vaccination increases, the vaccination center is moving to a new ice rink. The mail will be delivered within a few days and will be maintained as a backup vaccination site.

The new ice palace (Kovo 11-osios str. 26, next to the Girstutis basin) has facilities where Kaunas residents will be safely vaccinated. In order to make more efficient use of the facilities, a new service system has been developed. The number of people at various stages of vaccination is also controlled automatically, so if there is a queue somewhere, it can be quickly reduced.

“It is possible that the central post office is already crowded, so we were admitted to the ice palace. It will be like a baptism for this place. This space has completely different dimensions and provides a different comfort. Here we have also been able to apply solutions innovators that speed up the vaccination process. One of them is that with us, a nurse can take care of two patients. While one prepares, the other is vaccinated, their information is collected, so a position is free, another person comes In this way, we achieve a much higher yield, ”said Paulius Kibiša, director of the Kaunas City Polyclinic, about the new vaccination center.

He said there are currently sixteen cabins in the ice house, but that number will double next week. Volunteers from the Red Cross, the Kaunas ambulance station and medical students help coordinate the entire process.

Vaccination rate

P. Kibiša, director of the Kaunas City Polyclinic, stated that after the EU indicated that the amount of vaccines supplied would increase rapidly, the city was also prepared for mass vaccination. It is estimated that Kaunas could vaccinate about 6 thousand people a day. people, and if private clinics also contribute, the number of Kaunas residents vaccinated could reach 10,000 per day.

“To date, about 2.5 percent have been vaccinated in Kaunas. Populations. If we get enough vaccines, we will reach 70 percent with our available resources. Populations that we could in 85 days. In other words, if we got the amount of vaccinations and we would start the vaccination process at full speed on Monday, we would reach 70% on May 25. rate of vaccinated Kaunas residents. However, now it all depends on how many vaccines we receive, so the number of people we we can vaccinate constantly changes, “said Kibiša.

Currently, older bosses are being vaccinated. Vaccines can also be administered to employees of educational institutions who have expressed a desire for immunity. Later, the vaccination of Kaunas residents over 65 will begin.

The vaccines were waiting

Older adults arrive at the Kaunas Ice Palace both alone and accompanied by their families. Kaunas residents interviewed said they were waiting for the vaccine, because they already missed regular communication with their grandchildren and wanted to feel safe.

The central post office may already be crowded, so we were admitted to the ice palace. It will be like a baptism for this place.

“It just came to our knowledge then. I signed up and received a message to come here. I don’t know what vaccine I received. In any case, it is not very important, because there is still no water. The place is very good, it is convenient to come here” said Marijonas, who was sitting in the waiting room after the vaccination.

“I really wanted to do it, because there will still be some protection. I may feel bad for a couple of days after vaccination, but after that everything will be fine, I will be protected and there will be a lower risk of infection. I really missed my grandchildren. I did not want to get vaccinated with that third vaccine (AstraZeneca – ed. Past.), I put “Modern”, will have to come back, but everything is fine, great service, “said Aldona from Kaunas, who just got vaccinated .

Older people were vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine on Friday. However, all available vaccines will be administered in the following days.

The infrastructure is fully utilized

7.5 thousand in a square meter area, population flows are proportionally distributed and do not mix with each other. Kaunas residents will enter the vaccination center through one entrance and return home through another. A group of Red Cross volunteers helps visitors find their way.

At the Ice Palace, patients will immediately be divided into two groups: one will be sent to a separate room to fill out questionnaires and consent forms, and those who organize the documents will immediately travel online to the arena’s squares, where the ice. temporarily replaced by vital medical infrastructure.

One site has a vaccination area and the other can provide a space for rapid serological tests for antibodies if necessary. Currently, 16 vaccination booths are installed here under a special scheme, but this number could be quickly doubled if necessary.

Vaccination is currently the best preventive measure against COVID-19.

Immediately after vaccination, residents are directed to a 170-seat observatory, where they must spend at least 15 minutes. Patients sitting at a safe distance are supervised by emergency medical personnel on call after the vaccination procedure so that qualified assistance can be provided as soon as necessary.

It is estimated that the new vaccination center can serve up to several hundred patients at a time, and working at full capacity in Kaunas, up to 10,000 people can be vaccinated per day.

The starting point is international examples.

“Due to the pandemic, the city was unable to invite winter sports enthusiasts to the opening ceremony of the new ice palace, but so we have an ideal place to work. Conditions for vaccination are much better here: more space, better lighting, modern heating and ventilation systems, as well as flow management.

All processes go smoothly: we have vaccinated several hundred elderly people in just a few days and today we have another 645 patients on the list of people to be vaccinated. A special information system makes it possible to directly view the flow of visitors, the duration of the procedures and other important parameters, which will help to organize the work even better, taking into account the real situation and the analysis of objective data. We are ready to increase the pace as soon as we receive the vaccine replacement, ”shared Paulius Kibiša, director of the Kaunas City Polyclinic, with his first impressions.

One of the starting points for planning the movement flows and the use of the Kaunas Ice Palace facilities was the work at the Central Post Vaccination Center. In addition, international practice has served. In Germany, Great Britain, the US and other countries, large sports stadiums are already being transformed into vaccination centers. It is the first center of this scale in Lithuania so far.

Justinas Dzidzevičius, Director of the Kalniečiai Branch of the Kaunas City Polyclinic, which coordinates the COVID-19 vaccination and testing processes, admits that the new vaccination center in Kaunas has been installed only after a thorough analysis of samples foreign and local. The most proven patient flow and staff management processes, facility allocation and tagging principles have been applied at the Ice Palace.

Opening – after quarantine

The actual opening of the new ice house is scheduled to end when the quarantine ends. After the quarantine, this winter sports complex will attract not only modern spaces, but also functional ice rinks, where athletes and city dwellers from various ice branches will find a place.

The new building meets the highest energy requirements. This means that renewable energy will also be used, thus reducing the impact on the environment and climate. Next to the winter sports complex there is a parking lot, with a small architecture, so that visitors will be greeted by an orderly atmosphere. There are even several fields in the ice palace, so both figure skaters and hockey players will find a place, and spectators will be able to watch the game in comfortable stands. There are also administration spaces within the building, and special acoustics will ensure better acoustics. The winter sports complex was built by the Autokausta company. The new installation cost around 14 million. of which about 8 million. designated by the Government.
