Political scientists disagree on whether TS-LKD made a mistake

[ad_1]

The party has been announcing the upcoming election of the TS-LKD president for some time, so Rima Urbonaitė, a political scientist at Mykolas Romeris University (MRU), says that the decision not to hold elections is strange and useless for the party. .

The political scientist emphasizes that the conservatives missed an opportunity in public to speak of themselves not only as a ruler, but also as a party. However, R. Urbonaitė points out that, in this situation, TS-LKD has two options: immediately appoint G. Landsbergis as party president for another term or postpone the election of the party president until the end of the pandemic.

Professor Lauras Bielinis from the Vytautas Magnus University sees this decision of TS-LKD somewhat differently. The political scientist believes that the decision not to compete with the current party leader G. Landsbergis shows that the TS-LKD has a clear hierarchical order, which, according to him, is beneficial to the party.

R. Urbonaitė: Conservatives lost the opportunity to speak of themselves as a party

R. Urbonaitė, a political scientist at Mykolas Romeris University (MRU), believes that the decision not to organize the election of the party’s president is a “strange maneuver”, which does not benefit the conservatives themselves.
“It seems to me that such a mistake has been made by the fact that it was announced quite clearly that such elections will take place, even the Conservatives themselves distributed the details of the upcoming elections, as they will try to involve not only the Conservative Party” Eltai R. Urbonaitė said.

According to R. Urbonaitė, the argument that elections are not held due to a pandemic is also weak.
“It seems to me, however, that a pandemic should not undo the discussions in the party or the procedures that are planned,” said the political scientist.

“I understand that perhaps Landsberg’s chances of winning were really high, he had a hard time competing, but we cannot say that this nomination alone does not show that there is competition,” he also noted.

R. Urbonaitė emphasized that in this situation the party can opt for several solutions, one of which may be to postpone the election of the party president until the end of the pandemic.

“It just came to my knowledge then.” One possible solution is to appoint Gabriel Landsberg immediately to a practically new term, the other solution is to postpone these elections and give G. Landsbergis to chair the party for another term, half a year or a year. , but planning such elections, “said R. Urbonaitė.

“I don’t know which option they will choose.” It seems to me that if you choose a pandemic as an argument and a pandemic, we all hope it is temporary, then the idea of postponing the elections could come up, “he said.

Thus, the political scientist emphasizes that by deciding not to elect the party’s president, the conservatives “missed a good opportunity not only to speak of themselves as current rulers, but also of themselves as a party.”

L. Bielinis: this shows a clear hierarchical order within the party

Professor L. Bielinis of Vytautas Magnus University (Vytautas Magnus University) believes that the decision not to organize the election of the party president shows a clear hierarchical order of the TS-LKD, which, according to him, is beneficial to the party.

“Within the party, this shows a certain established hierarchical order. This is probably good for the internal life of the party. Because, in fact, internal distractions within parties sometimes cause such storms, which are unexpected for the parties themselves, ”L. Bielinis told Eltai.

“I think it is healthy for the party itself because the internal hierarchy must be clear and understandable for everyone and the majority must be loyal to that hierarchy. In this case, we have seen that in fact the hierarchical relationship is clear and understandable within the party ”, he also emphasized.
However, the political scientist acknowledged that the decision of the TS-LKD parties not to compete with G. Landsbergis in public could lead to different interpretations.

In public, such action can give rise to various interpretations and can also be treated negatively, such as the usurpation of power or the absence of alternative leaders in a political party. But there will always be all kinds of comments in public, “said the political scientist.

However, L. Bielinis emphasizes that the clear hierarchical structure of the TS-LKD and the withdrawal of the crickets from the party’s elections does not mean that there is no diversity of opinion in the party. He emphasizes that in the party, it is often noticed that there are clearly differentiated value positions, which can cause not only discord, but also storms.

“In fact, there is a diversity of opinions, a variety of positions within the party, there is and there is debate. The hierarchy of the party indicates the clarity of the structure, the perception of all about the role it plays in the party. Meanwhile, the positions or orientations of values are very diverse and the presence of hierarchies does not limit this discussion ”, pointed out L. Bielinis.
