Kaunas resident’s observation: why does the infrastructure of the same bike path differ in the city and the district?

“Driving from Kaunas on Panerių Street to Lapiai, there is a newly installed cycle path. With the end of the Kaunas city limits and the beginning of the district, project implementation begins to differ. Inside the Kaunas area, there are no complaints: curbs are placed so cars don’t accidentally get stuck behind the side fence. Safe, beautiful And here in the district there are no curbs to guarantee safety, on the sides: gravel. As far as I know, several machines have already scratched the sides because there are no curbs.

The fence area in the Kaunas district is covered with grass. Why is the project and implementation common in the Kaunas district area different from the city area? Aleksas de Kaunas asked the question.

The Kaunas district municipality explained that in the territory of the Kaunas district, in the elders of Domeikava and Lapiai, there is a state-important road No. 232. Along with it, the Lithuanian Highway Administration (LAKD) installed a lane 6 kilometer bike. The maintenance of this trail is carried out by the state company “Kelių tyrimai” in accordance with the established procedure.

Lapiai elder Rimantas Stankus reported that this year the sidewalks of the bike path have already been cut and are currently being cut again. Here, on June 8, a lawn mower was also working on site.

“It just caught our eye then. The Directorate first installed a trail in the territory of the Kaunas district and only later did the Kaunas City Municipality build a section next to it. Please note that the information provided in the complaint did not corresponds to reality The technical data of the bicycle lane (barriers, curbs, width, etc.) in the territory of the city of Kaunas and the district of Kaunas do not differ significantly.

The way the sidewalks of the bike path are handled in the Kaunas City and Kaunas District territories can be seen by looking at the photos. The person who sent the complaint may not know where the Kaunas city limits end and where, “said Edmundas Mališauskas, Advisor to the Mayor of the Municipality of Kaunas District.

The municipality of Kaunas city reported that the contractors of the Paneriai cycle path, UAB Kauno keliai, began work on June 1, 2019. The construction of the bicycle lane is scheduled for July 1 of this year. The price of the works is 1,896,932 euros with VAT. The project is funded by LAKD.

The bike path is located on Strazdo Street and beyond, on Panerių Street, up to the Kaunas city limit. The length of the trail is 4 km. The city limit ends at the Saliai stream, where the passage is installed, more precisely, in building 16 of the Širdažoliai trail. From it – already the territory of the district.
