According to Saulius Jansonas, Communications Manager of the International Communications and Communications Division of the Lithuanian Highway Administration, Delfi announced the purchase of five parts for the reconstruction of the 10 Vilnius to Kaunas – Klaipėda sections of the A1 state highway from 10 to 95 kilometers in 2019.
The contract for the third part of the purchase of 27.56 to 56.97 km was signed with the Fegda company in October 2019.
“The decision to build the tunnel, which is just one of the works to be carried out under the contract, was made in 2017-2018, during the preparation of technical projects and after receiving several requests from the community.
Please note that the A1 highway divides the Strošiūnai settlement into two parts. After the installation of the above-mentioned underground passage, the integrity of Strošiūnai village was restored and, more importantly, direct and secure communication between the two sides of the settlement was ensured, ”said a LAKD representative.
According to the property register, there are a total of ten residential houses in Strošiūnai.
Until then, according to S. Janson, residents had to travel quite a long distance to get to the other side of the A1 highway, or cross a very dangerous highway in an unauthorized location in violation of the Traffic Regulations.
“This solution also ensures that heavy agricultural machinery does not enter the A1, thus avoiding dangerous traffic situations that can cause especially serious accidents. Note that the project will allow a speed of 130 kilometers per hour on this road.
The road through the tunnel is accessible to pedestrians and cyclists, while ensuring the safety of passengers using public transport, since public transport stops from the A1.
The construction of the tunnel is one of the works foreseen in the contract “Reconstruction of the section of the state highway A1 Vilnius – Kaunas – Klaipėda from 27,560 to 56,970 km”. The estimated contractual amount for the tunnel itself is approximately 2.1 million. euros.
The contractor plans to complete the tunnel passage and the construction of the connecting roads in full by July 1, ”he said.
Questions about the tunnel on this part of the road arose during a session of the Seimas Economic Committee.
“The 55 km tunnel is not clear to anyone, large sums have been spent and the only go-kart track seems to be there. What were the criteria there, especially since there are detours 2-3 km away?” Andrius Kupčinskas, member of the Christian Democratic faction of the National-Lithuanian Union.
For his part, the chairman of the committee, Kazys Starkevičius, laughed that the Strošiūnai settlement is “very large.”
“The settlement is two farms on one side and three on the other,” he said.
