“The High Representative’s visit to Moscow made it very clear that Russia does not want to talk to the European Union. I would say that every mistake has a certain advantage because it is a lesson. A lesson that can be learned by those EU officials who had the naivety to believe that it was possible to go (to Russia – ELTA) and that this would be enough to build a relationship. Unfortunately, that did not happen. The humiliation occurred. Russia has humiliated the European Union, “he said.
European Union foreign ministers made a political decision on Monday to impose sanctions on Russian officials responsible for the jailing of Alexei Navaln and the crackdown on peaceful protesters. As already announced, sanctions will be imposed on four high-ranking Russian officials.
According to A. Skaisgirytė, the sanctions could take effect one month after all the necessary information on each of them has been collected.
“The EU services will do the same now. It is expected to be achieved in a month. Then, depending on how many names there will be, the sanctions will be approved,” he said, adding that Lithuania had proposed to sanction more Russian officials.
“Lithuania and like-minded countries proposed to involve more officials. Four names remained after the discussion. Once again, the very principle that there should be no impunity is important. And this principle remains,” summarized the adviser.
On Monday, the Council of the European Union concluded that Russia was determined to confront the Community.
