Emma Coronel, 31, is charged with transporting cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana to the United States, the department said.

Guzmán was the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, one of Mexico’s most infamous drug trafficking groups, until he was extradited to the United States in 2017. In July 2019, he was sentenced to life in prison.

According to the Justice Department, Coronel was involved in the cartel and possibly also contributed to two conspiracies to help Guzmán escape from prison in Mexico. During the first such attempt in 2015, he managed to escape to freedom.

It was not previously known that the US authorities intended to arrest the wife of a former drug dealer baron.

After twinning with Ms. Guzmán, Ms. Coronel, who has US and Mexican citizenship, appeared in court in New York almost daily, where her husband’s case was heard for three months.

At that time, it was already suspected that she had contributed to Mr. Guzmán’s activities and helped him escape from prison, but the authorities allowed her to freely attend the meetings.

“I can say that I have nothing to be ashamed of. I am not perfect, but I consider myself a good person who never intentionally hurt anyone,” she said at the conclusion of the court.

Colonel is due to appear in federal court in Washington on Tuesday in a video conference.
