The idea of sharing was born while growing up in a family.

Justė herself, when asked how the idea of creating a space where people could share food instead of clothes and things came about, said she had liked the idea of sharing since childhood.

“Since I was a child, I have seen in a close environment how fun it is to share. If the mother or grandmother canned cucumbers or beets for the winter or cooked delicious jams, she always shared them with family, neighbors, and friends. And there were always comments: family, friends or neighbors shared fresh vegetables from the garden or dried mushrooms with us.

The idea of sharing fascinated me incessantly. Later, interested in a sustainable lifestyle, I found out how much food was being thrown away and decided to take something with me. This is how this platform was born.

Today, I try to buy only those foods in the store that I will need for the prepared dish. Personally, the pre-made product list helps me a lot. So I know exactly what and how much I have to buy, so I don’t add too much to the cart, that is, products that are not needed at the moment.

Human beings, by nature, are voters, we like to hoard, so we have a relentless desire to buy more than we need, and then we have to throw away bad food. This is how food waste is born ”, said the interlocutor.

The motives of the group participants are different

As she says herself, she created the facebook group “Food Supply” driven by the idea that sharing is always easier than asking. The main goal was to try to reduce the amount of good and edible food at least a little while helping people who could not afford to buy enough food.

“I wanted to put together a community where people shared and exchanged free food and everyone felt the same. In this group, people can request and share food.

More than a year ago, a large mother who was having great difficulties wrote to me and asked me to write anonymously to the group in need of food assistance. In about an hour about ten volunteers appeared, who were already preparing the farmers and cooperating with each other, which will be more convenient to bring, “said the interlocutor.

In the group, people often share canned food, jams, honey, as well as long-lasting foods such as pasta, coffee, tea, spices, sweets, baby mixes.

“I also noticed certain seasonal trends. For example, after the big parties of the year, the number of people willing to share food that has already been prepared (assorted cakes, meat products, mixes) is increasing. In summer and autumn, the yield of harvested vegetables or fruits.

People share being driven for different reasons: some support zero waste idea, for others it is fun to share, for others it is important to get closer. It is not so much why this is done, but rather the process itself and the end result.

There is a group of people who are constantly sharing, they are active and there are also individual shares. I noticed that when the activity started, more people wrote to me, as an administrator, about the food they had, with a request to announce their desire to share but remain anonymous. Now there is an increase in the number of people uploading information on their own, on their own. It shows that people are brave, they are free ”, Justė considered.

Funny stories from group participants

According to the interlocutor, it does not matter at all: a person is rich or lives poorer, sharing food is fun for everyone. It can be shared even when too much is produced.

“Someone does not know or does not have time to cook cherry jam, but they like it a lot, and for someone, the cupboard tends to jam that they cannot eat at all. Here we have a mutual victory and already at least two happy people.

One of our members, Camille, once shared such a story. Before the New Year, she decided to leave her home and give away things she didn’t need and just took up space. While managing it, he pointed out that he has a lot of vaccinated and canned products: beets, jams, vegetables, honey, etc., so I decided not to throw away all this good, but to give it to whoever really needs it.

When he posted an entry in the grocery store, he received a message from a foreign ISM student who was unable to return home for the holidays due to quarantine. “I am a student myself and I really understand how sometimes it can be difficult with money and now I can’t go home yet. So we met on the first day of the New Year. I gladly gave him all the food that I really would not have eaten alone and wished myself a good 2021. A few days later, I received a message from him saying that everything was very tasty, ”Kamilė wrote to me.

So sometimes all that is needed is creativity of goodwill to solve the dilemmas that arise. This is particularly well illustrated by the story of Paul, the father of six children. After posting a message about the delivery of the food, he immediately got two people to be willing to deliver it. Not wanting to upset anyone, Povilas and his wife decided to form a second basket of products. “They were both very grateful and they saw a light of joy,” Povilas said, joking that it was good that the two had come at different times, “Justė said.

The young woman opened with great joy that the unifying idea of sustainability creates community and more and more people are involved in this activity.

“I am happy to find like-minded people, not only who want to extend a helping hand to another, but also feel the fun of sharing for free. I believe that this initiative will attract even more diverse people who will generate ideas to create a more beautiful and clean ”, the interviewee is convinced.
