Drivers filled with plain diesel instead of Arctic are likely to face this problem. Suppose for reasons of economy. Or not change the summer diesel for the winter one. Or without cleaning the tank of your old vehicle without changing the fuel filter for a long time.
Clicking on a 15-20 degree cold brings out all the problems. And the fuel system is one of the most sensitive.
What to do if the tank freezes and the fuel thickens or the filter becomes clogged due to paraffin? First of all, remember the truth that stingy pay twice. So in the cold winter, saving pennies by buying cheaper diesel (choose with two snowflakes, second-class Arctic) is definitely not worth it.
Well, if you already have spoons in the afternoon, you need to take serious action. What do the “garage experts” advise on the Internet? It usually offers a fan to heat the entire fuel line (pipes) and filter. Others try to pump fuel into the engine directly from another tank, bypassing the fuel tank. The ideal is to tow or move the car to a warm room: the underground garage of the supermarket or ask friends.
A participant in the Dakar Rally followed suit and his team’s diesel car returned from Marseille (it sailed from Saudi Arabia to France). After picking up the car in Vilnius (the air temperature dropped to -15 degrees at the time) and feeling a tug, he immediately headed to one of the bigger shopping centers. He added a liter of gas to his tank in his garage …
And even then, after letting the engine idle, he headed to the gas station and filled the tank to the top with arctic diesel.
However, agree, with a hair dryer or hot water, even indoors, defrost diesel – a difficult mission. And even risky.
What the professionals say
Saulius Repečka, the manager of the professional diesel car service Autura, supports the tactic of transporting a frozen car to a warm room first. And after that it is already suitable for changing fuels. Of course, according to S.Repečka, it is best to transport it directly to the service, where the craftsmen will extract the unsuitable winter diesel from the tank. Replace a clogged filter if necessary. Of course, this may require disconnecting the fuel tank or the lines that supply fuel to the injectors. And that already requires an expert force.
“Of course, if you manage to defrost the car in the garage, the driver can pump the diesel from the tank himself. Either manually (in a rubber bulb, as in the old days), or by buying an electric pump. And then fill the system with high-quality Arctic diesel, ”said Saulius Repečka.
According to the specialist, when pressing the speed of -20 degrees or rushing to work early in the morning, it is unlikely that the entire fuel line can be defrosted with a fan. After all, she goes under the entire bottom of the car.
S.Repečka evaluates the experiments when gasoline is added to the tank (up to 3-4% of the available amount of diesel). Yes, if it’s not too cold this procedure can help start the car, but it is very damaging to both the injectors and the fuel pump. So if you’re already determined to take a chance and you have around 50 liters of unsuitable winter diesel in your tank, you can’t get more than 2 liters of gasoline out of a big deal.
“Cars made before 2003-2005 are less afraid of them attention. However, newer diesel engines are more sensitive to fuel quality and even more sensitive to winter experiments, ”summarized Saulius Repečka.
