Vaida Budrienė, communication manager of the retail chain Iki, says that during the quarantine this trend has only intensified: the trade of various onion seeds and seedlings has already started and recently they are more and more in the shopping baskets, according to the report.

“This year we started selling several seeds this year on January 18, and onion seedlings in the first week of February. The latter are getting more and more attention as spring approaches. According to sales data, the buyers mainly buy onion seedlings in February and March. Meanwhile, the peak of seed purchases starts a little later, in April. During the season, even around 0.8 million of them are sold “, says V. Budrienė .

Grown at home

She is also supported by Vilma Juodkazienė, a food expert at the retail chain Iki. She says that onions and their leaves not only bring greenery and life to the home, but should also be included in the daily diet. This vegetable has healing properties, vitamins and rich minerals. Onion leaves contain carotene, vitamin C, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus. Those who want to enjoy freshly grown onion leaves will soon be able to plant seedlings in pots.

“It would be difficult to list all the benefits of onions and their leaves, because there are so many of them. In addition, they can be used practically everywhere in the kitchen: onion leaves can be used to flavor not only salads, but also soups, omelettes, meat dishes. It is also interesting that this favorite ingredient of Lithuanian cuisine is widely used also in Asian countries ”, emphasizes V. Juodkazienė.

According to her, onion seedlings, like other vegetables or herbs, grow best in specially designed soil enriched with minerals. It is better to plant onion seedlings at a depth of 2-3 cm: when planting, 2/3 of the heads should be underground, a third – above the ground. Only after planting, it is better to keep them in a warm dark place, and when the seedlings sprout, move them to the windowsill, where the onions will receive more light.

According to V. Juodkazienė, maintaining humidity is another very important factor that will ensure a rich yield of onion leaves. Planted onion seedlings should be watered constantly in moderation, it is better to use a water sprayer to avoid overwatering. The expert says that by following these rules, you will eat fresh onion leaves at home in a few weeks.
