The so-called Nida airport at Cape Bulvikis operated until 1999. D. Jasasaitis recalls how at that time, even before regaining independence, flights to the Curonian Spit from the capital Kaunas and Palanga were operated by An-24 aircraft.
“The rocket was more expensive to arrive than to fly,” recalled the mayor.
Since 1998, Nida Airport has been allowed for commercial purposes for some time, and LTL 5.6 million has been allocated for its rebuilding of the state. LTL. In the first stage of reconstruction, the track was extended from 600 meters to 815 meters, and 4-meter-wide lanes were installed on both sides of the track to install a rainwater drainage system. In the second phase, it was planned to extend the runway to 1,200 meters to accommodate small passenger planes, but these plans were abandoned due to ecological protests.
A terrain of 14.4 ha was registered for the flight line with safety zones at the state registration company. In 2001, due to a plane crash, all planes except helicopters were prohibited from landing here.

A few years later, in 2005, the Neringa City Council decided to complete the reconstruction of the airport. During the second phase, it was planned to remove the obstacles located in the airport area and install water treatment plants. However, by order of the Klaipėda County Governor, the municipality of Neringa was deprived of the right to manage the land around the runway, which is necessary to complete the reconstruction of the airport.
I flew in just one summer
In 2015, the state returned the airport to the municipality. In 2016, several preparatory works began: tall trees were cut down, the track was repainted and weather vanes were installed.
An aviation festival soon took place, and since June 2016, with the permission of the Civil Aviation Administration (CAA), the planes began to land at the airfield. During that summer, it is estimated that more than 40 of them arrived, both from Lithuania and from abroad. In 2017, the Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces signed a flight order in the border area, so no permits for sports, recreational, recreational and similar flights have been issued since then. Planes that were not involved in state management, search and rescue operations were no longer able to take off and land here.
Neringa Mayor Darius Jasaitis still remembers how he counted 12 private planes parked when he visited the airport on a summer day in the year mentioned. That summer, he himself says that he flew from Palanga to Curonian Spit.

“Both taxi drivers worked and someone protected the planes. After a very long break, they were able to allow flights again during a season with field status. It ended very quickly. We hope to start again. 15 minutes D.Jasaitis spoke. – There is a great need for both foreigners and Lithuanians who want the so-called VIP class or 5-star services instead of queuing on the ferry.
Many people do not come because they cannot afford to stand in line for three hours. Not with one of these and I’ve had to communicate. He says we would choose to rest if we weren’t caught in an additional case and could leave, otherwise we could lose huge sums of money. This is how other resorts are chosen. We are trying to register an airfield, this is the case in Birštonas, Druskininkai, Kaunas and other places. In fact, not to mention, an aerodrome like ours, because here it is one of the best. Anyway, the airfield is in the meadows, and we have a paved road and we can’t do anything for so many years. “

The municipality is seeking to change the status of an open-air site to an airfield. The bureaucratic processes are still ongoing, the documents are being processed and the incidents are being coordinated with the aviation authorities.
“I already have a request to fly from the Germans, I saw it. Next week, the person in charge arrives to handle the situation. So far, a lot has been canceled on Covid-19, someone sent documents to someone but didn’t send them there “I think we are straightforward to register at the aerodrome. We plan to have it in July. It will be very bad if we do not publish the status of the aerodrome. Only private and experimental planes with up to six seats will be able to fly here,” said D. Jasaitis.
He says, as seriously as he jokes, that if this project fails, he will have to furnish the airfield space with solar panels.

It is important not to disturb wildlife.
According to Aušra Feser, the head of the Curonian Spit National Park, the park would not be in front of the airfield, but it is very important that it does not disturb the seriousness of this complex.
In general, if you will fly over Nida or if you will be allowed to fly over the city. A little noise, the background would not be very suitable for a resort like Neringa, – said A. Feser.
“We would very much like the order to be very clear about what is happening, how flights, takeoffs and landings are happening. We would like to see one like this so far. The management plan states that said order must be in place. If it can be used properly, to balance everyone’s interests … It is very important how it will fly, if not harm the migration of birds, the important moment for nature. In general, if you will fly over Nida or if you will be allowed to fly over the city. A little noise, the background would not be very suitable for a tourist complex like Neringa, the municipality also understands that the right decisions must be made, “said A. Feser.
According to her, there has been everything in the past: the plane took off again in the sky as soon as it landed. Cognitive flights were organized over the Curonian Spit.
“I understand that it was very nice looking at one person from above, but it is not very good for a thousand people at the bottom,” said the manager.
