Australian State Prime Minister: British tension is moving at an unprecedented rate

The state restrictions will go into effect at midnight Friday and run through Wednesday of next week, Andrews said.

There are 19 cases of active coronavirus in Victoria. Five new confirmed cases in the past 24 hours have been in close contact with those involved in the outbreak at the Holiday Inn at Melbourne Airport, which was used to isolate incoming travelers.

Although the confirmed cases are contacts of known infected people, the rapid spread of the “British” variety makes it difficult to trace the contacts, Andrews said.

The “hyper-infection and speed” of the “British” strain means authorities must assume that there are unidentified cases of infection in the community, the prime minister said.

“It’s moving at a rate that we haven’t seen in the country in 12 months,” Andrews said.

According to him, waiting for more cases of infection to be detected in the community carries the risk that the state may have to introduce a much longer quarantine.

During the five-day quarantine, people will be able to leave their homes to buy essential items, care for other people, go to work or study, and exercise outdoors for two hours a day.

It will also be necessary to stay no more than 5 km from home and wear masks everywhere.
