This was announced on Friday by the Department of Environmental Protection (AAD), which carried out an inspection of the Būtingė terminal operated by Orlen Lietuvos. According to the department, 2.8 tons of oil spilled into the Baltic Sea.
“All the material has been handed over to the Klaipeda Public Prosecutor’s Office, the investigation has not yet concluded. Therefore, if new factual circumstances are established regarding the amount of crude oil entering the sea, the amount of damage can be adjusted caused to the environment, ”Olga Vėbrienė, AAD chief, said in the report.
According to AAD, Orlen Lietuva has already compensated for the damage done to nature.
Oil spilled into the Baltic Sea on December 28. The Environment Ministry stated at the time that up to 2 tons of oil had been spilled into the Baltic Sea, but O. Vėbrienė claimed at the end of January that the amount of oil spilled was unclear.
The site was later reported to be about 4 kilometers long and about 100 meters wide. The following day, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center announced that the oil slick had dissipated.
Orlen Lietuva has been importing oil through the Būtingė terminal since 2006, when the Polish company Orlen acquired the then Mažeikių Nafta.
There have been four major or minor incidents at the terminal, which has been in operation since 1998, in 1999-2008.
