The Council agreed that the plot in Vydūno al. 4 would be recognized as necessary for automobile construction and for public use.

“Since 1998, this plot has already been formed, it has more than 3 ha, its purpose is commercial. This is not a plot of Ąžuolynas Park, it is a separate plot. And we think it would be convenient to install a parking lot there, since it could also serve the S. Darius and S. Girėnas stadiums, the Sports Center, the new construction, the Ąžuolynas Park and the zoo ”, the Municipal Transport and Traffic Martynas Matusevičius, Head of the Organization Department.

According to him, this is a strategically convenient place where people could safely and comfortably leave their cars, because now that they establish the Radvilėnai Highway, people are crossing the street unsafe here.

According to the representatives of the municipality, this decision will ensure the beneficial use of the plot and promises to preserve the valuable trees that grow on it.

At the time, the opposition criticized the decision and called for alternative parking spaces. According to her, the municipality does not adequately address the problems of traffic congestion in the city center.

“The installation of such a site on the territory of Ąžuolynas is indeed causing public discontent, and Ąžuolynas is not the place where a parking lot could be installed. Perhaps it will be possible to install a recreation area,” said conservative Vitas Lendraitis.

His faction colleague Paulius Lukševičius said the municipality should encourage people to leave their cars at the border of the center and not allow them to drive to the center.

However, M. Matusevičius pointed out that the example of the “Žalgiris” arena shows that even with excellent public transport connections and organizing additional routes after events, many people still travel to them by car.

“We believe that when the S. Darius and S. Girėnas stadiums are built, there will certainly not be a Sports Street, the pedestrian zone as a whole, built with cars and residents of the surrounding areas would be held hostage by cars,” said a representative from municipality.

He added that people arriving downtown from more remote areas could leave their cars here and continue on public transportation.

The conservative faction elder Edita Gudišauskienė replied that this only shows once again that the integrity and coherence of the territory was not taken into account when designing the reconstruction of the S. Darius and S. Girėnas stadiums.

“The parking lot will meet the needs of only a small part of the population: drivers, but not a much larger number of inhabitants or city guests who want to spend time in the centenary oasis of Ąžuolynas Park and preserve the natural uniqueness of the area for the future generations, “he said.

It is planned to install up to 1,950 parking spaces in the 3.3 ha area delimited by El Roble.

During the meeting, the mayor of Kaunas, Visvaldas Matijošaitis, promised that it would be a “green” parking lot, but said that urban planners preparing the project will speak to make specific decisions.

“It will not be there where it is paved, the pavement will be hard, it will be done in stages, but here the urban planners will say. And there will be a green parking lot, ”said the mayor.

The municipality’s plans to install a site here met with the disapproval of a portion of Kaunas residents – nearly 1,500. the people signed a petition expressing their support for taking possession of the land, but not for the construction of a plot on it.

Approximately 770 oak trees grow in the Ąžuolynas park, and the most unique value of this park is the 100- to 300-year-old oak trees with a trunk diameter of 100 to 160 centimeters.

This park is home to one of the rarest beetles in Lithuania and Europe, the dark-colored golden beetle, and is also protected as a Natura 2000 site from the European ecological network.

The grove is estimated to be several thousand years old. In 2005, 59 bird species were recorded on the park’s territory during the nature diversity research, 29 bird species were included in the lists of endangered species in Europe.
