Ski resorts are allowed to open: some are already looking for workers, others will not even start operating

“The question of whether everyone would decide to open up, since services can only be provided to the people of their municipality, it is obvious that restrictions have been established, but the company itself will decide whether to operate in those conditions for so long since there will be winter in Lithuania, “said Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė.

“People enjoy the joys of winter. Our solution would allow us to participate in skiing and other related activities at the ski resorts in a beautiful, orderly and organized way,” said Aušrinė Armonaitė, the Minister of Economy and Innovation, during the Government meeting on Monday.

According to her, those in charge of these centers are determined to guarantee security and take all security measures.

According to the government decision, tickets for the routes will have to be sold electronically only, visitors will be registered remotely. The provision of ski equipment rental services and non-ski services will remain prohibited.

The flow of visitors to the ski slopes should be limited; the maximum number of visitors allowed at any one time is calculated on the basis of the number of lifts in operation: a maximum of 30 visitors per lift.

Open ski resorts will be open on Tuesday. Gated resorts, such as the Snow Arena in Druskininkai, will remain closed.

On Wednesday, the government is preparing a proposal to allow the provision of beauty services, to operate non-essential goods stores with independent entrance.

Some ski resorts will not open

If the government decides on Monday to allow the ski centers to operate, some slopes will remain closed due to movement controls between municipalities.

One such route is on Kalita Hill in Anykščiai.

“We do not plan to open, because there are movement restrictions between municipalities, and we will not have as many local residents,” director Ligita Kuliešait, director of the Anykščiai district municipal administration, told BNS.

“It will probably not pay for those like us, the little ones, perhaps it is more relevant to Vilnius here,” he added.

Jonava does not usually open the ski center either, but the decision is scheduled to be made together with the municipality on Tuesday.

“At the moment, we tend not to open it, because very few Jonavos will be able to take advantage of it (…) We will decide it tomorrow,” Edmundas Mulokas, head of Jonavos paslaugos, said on Monday. According to him, the non-opening of ski slopes is favored by the continuous control of movement between municipalities, the prohibition of renting equipment.

“If the rental of the equipment is not allowed, only a very small part of the local population will remain,” said the director of the company, lamenting that the ski center will remain inaccessible to Kaunas residents.

Ignalina is considering opening for the weekend

Bronislav Cicėnas, director of the Lithuanian Winter Sports Center in Ignalina, said that due to the restrictions imposed by the government, it would take several days to prepare, but it is planned to open the door to ski lovers next weekend.

“There are many restrictions here, it is not that you have opened, you have inserted the key to the machine, you have started everything. What three days will pass. We plan to open during the weekend,” said B. Cicėnas.

He also regretted that only residents of the municipality where the ski center is located will be able to ski.

“But there is a problem: movement between municipalities is prohibited. If there is no shortage of customers in Vilnius all the time, then in the district, I think we will run out of customers on weekdays,” said the director of the center.

“The residents of neighboring municipalities always came – from Visaginas, Zarasai, Utena, then from Kaunas, Vilnius. I don’t know if we will have enough clients, “he added.

According to him, another disadvantage is that the rental of inventory is prohibited and the center would be ready to disinfect it further.

“If non-food stores with a separate entrance are allowed to operate, it would be nice if one person could enter the rental point and rent that inventory at the same time,” said B. Cicėnas.

Plunge fans will be looking forward to Tuesday

The Mortos Kalns ski center, located near Plungė, plans to receive visitors on Tuesday.

“Everything is ready with us. We will probably open on Tuesday,” said Saulius Gramauskas, director of the company that manages the slopes.

He also argued that movement controls and government-imposed restrictions on operations would be hampered in some way. “It is clear that it will interfere (…) It is not worth it, but what are you going to do? We do not have the right to choose, “said the head of the company.

The Liepkalnis ski center in Vilnius, which is currently looking for employees, is also planning to open.

“We hope to open soon, so we are urgently looking for a ski operator,” the center said on Facebook.
