The Seimas member Kęstutis Masiulis addressed the mayor of Vilnius Remigijus Šimašiai, proposing to consider the possibility of establishing a school in Vilnius in the language of instruction of the Ukrainians.

“There are more Ukrainian families in Vilnius and there are no schools in the Ukrainian language of instruction. It is worth talking with the community so that several classes can be started in existing schools, where there are not many students at the moment,” says the MP. .

According to data from the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports (ŠMSM), a total of more than 500 children from Ukraine study in Lithuanian schools. About 200 of them came just to study, while the other more than 300 are Ukrainian citizens permanently residing in Lithuania. In total, about 50 thousand people live in Lithuania. “Now, Ukrainians often choose schools with Russian as the language of instruction, which is a difficult decision for those who want to preserve their national identity. I think it would be right if the Ukrainian community had the opportunity to learn their language. There are schools in Vilnius with Polish, Russian, Belarusian, English and French languages. Some lessons are compulsory in the Lithuanian state language.
