Last year, Diff Invest acquired the UAB Verdispar Gluosniai, which manages this area of approximately 4 hectares, and began to create a vision for a new quarter. UAB LEZ projekti valdymas (LPV) was used to organize an architecture competition.
According to the director of LPV, Darius Juozapavičius, six groups of designers from Lithuania and Denmark submitted their proposals for the competition.
“There could have been more participants, but the project is large and requires a lot of resources, so some of the invited designers decided not to invest,” revealed D. Juozapavičius. According to him, all the views of the contest participants can be found on the website of the Casa de los Baluartes and express their opinion by voting. The winner is scheduled for next week.

The old town will recover
The architect Edmundas Andrijauskas, president of the Bastionų namai architecture competition commission, says that at least three of the works submitted to the competition, in his opinion, stand out for their originality.
“I am very hopeful that these investors will be successful in implementing the project, because only by enabling people to live in the city center can we hope to revive the old town,” said E. Andrijauskas.
According to him, about 10 visions have already been created in this area in almost two decades, and he has seen the work of college students so much.
During the time the area was waiting for development to begin, the detailed plan was changed up to 3 times.
“Now I see not only the interest of investors, but also the change in attitude of the Municipality towards the development of this territory – even two municipal architects participate in the commission of the architectural competition”, says E. Andrijauskas happily.
According to him, although the area is architecturally very sensitive, the important thing is that historically this place was a suburb behind the fortifications of the city, which was constantly burned or destroyed. Later generally adapted for wood storage.

Therefore, we cannot speak of reconstruction or restoration of historic buildings ”, E. Andrijauskas is delighted by the greater freedom of interpretation. He says there is no doubt that the discussion in the city about the architectural solutions of the Bastion House neighborhood will be very active. The architect, who in the previous stages already created his own visions of this territory, hopes that the fact that the architecture competition is organized without the help of the Architects Union will not prevent it.
“Yes, the Architects Union has clear rules, perhaps there would be more participants in the contest, but that path is not mandatory. The most important thing is to get things moving. In the first place, the development of the territory furthest from the city’s bastions would begin, then the issue of the construction of the highway and the Bastion Bridge planned by the territory would be resolved and finally the last stage of construction ”- E. Andrijauskas hopes The ambitions of investors, city and architects will be reconciled.
