Border guards suspected of organizing smuggling are influential and rewarded – court allowed them to be arrested

The court’s representative, Gintarė Vosyliūtė, informed BNS that the prosecutor had requested a three-month detention for all suspects, but that the stricter arrest warrant for a shorter period had been imposed on them.

Ričardas Birvinskas, head of the Druskininkai firewall of the SBGS Varėna team, and Kęstutis Šukis, head of the Pretrial Investigation Division of the Varėna team, were detained for a month, and Edgaras Garbenčius, chief investigator of the Criminal Intelligence Division of this team , for seven days.

According to the Service, border guards from the SBGS Immunity Board detained three agents from the Varėna Border Team in Druskininkai and Lazdijai during the pre-trial investigation into smuggling from Belarus, which began last year.

The officials’ actions also led to an official inspection.

The pre-trial investigation is controlled by the Prosecutor of the Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Division of the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
