“We have applied to the Vilnius City District Court for Swedbank’s obligation to rescind the breach of the contract,” Vladislav Šaruckis, chairman of the works council of the Belorus sanatorium, told BNS on Friday.
The bank froze the sanatorium’s accounts in December due to sanctions imposed by the European Union.
The court representatives informed BNS that they had not yet received the application.
According to the Records Center, the Belarusian sanatorium belongs to the Board of Presidential Affairs of Belarus. It is directed by Victor Family. The Board of Presidential Affairs reports directly to Aliaksandr Lukashenko.
At the end of 2020, the EU imposed sanctions on the General Economic Board (GHU), which reports directly to the Belarusian Presidential Affairs Board.
Family himself has been on the EU sanctions list for more than a decade.
Swedbank, which has frozen the accounts of the sanatorium, does not detail the exact basis on which that decision was made.
As the European Commission reported to the SNB, the Presidential Affairs Board is not on the sanctions list and therefore is not subject to a funds freeze unless it is established that “its assets or economic resources are owned or controlled by a listed person or entity. “
The EU imposed sanctions on the Belarusian regime for electoral fraud and violence against peaceful protesters.
