The government has increased college and university tuition fees, including undergraduate and residency studies, equated the cost of short studies with undergraduate studies, and increased the price components for student promotion costs, basic costs of goods and services.

At the same time, the price groups for university studies were reduced from 8 to 5, and the allocation of individual fields to them was clarified, thus comparing the prices of some studies.

Following these changes, the base rate for regulatory tuition fees at universities will increase to around € 12 to almost € 1,376, and university growth will increase by around € 82 to € 1,275. According to the MMSM, no additional budget expenditures will be needed this year, but from 2022 onwards, a total of about $ 33.7 million will be needed for changes in five years. euros.

Minister Jurgita Šiugždinienė states that decisions are made to increase state funding per student, thus raising the quality of studies, as funding is currently one of the lowest among OECD countries and only partially covers real costs organization of studies.

The Lithuanian Student Union on Tuesday voiced its opposition to the ministry’s initiative. According to the union, the process is rushed, can negatively affect the availability of studies and calls in the first place for a fundamental change in the very model for financing studies.

Among other things, the student union emphasizes that by increasing tuition per student, it is planned to reduce the number of state-funded study places, and this will force higher education institutions to increase tuition rates.

The Ministry emphasizes that the projects have been coordinated for long enough, the changes aim to improve the general quality of studies and the number of free places from around 13 to 12 thousand. this year it is reduced taking into account that part of the study places were not filled in the previous year. In addition, it is emphasized that part of the additional positions financed by the state last year were assigned by the previous government to unskilled occupations.

J. Šiugždinienė admitted that the studios will be more expensive at the same time. She emphasizes that the price of studies in the field of social sciences will be the one that will change the most, that is, the price will increase by 1.5 thousand. up to almost 3,000. According to the minister, students who have not been admitted to places financed by the state are currently opting for other studies several times more expensive.

The innovations will not be relevant to those who are already studying and will only take effect for students admitted as of this September.
