Via Baltica accident: tugboats hit, Russian and Latvian citizens killed

According to the Marijampolė County Police, the accident in Kalvarija Township took place around 6.51 o’clock.

According to Renatas Siaurusaitis, a Marijampolė county police representative, told BNS, the drivers of both trucks were killed: a Russian citizen, born in 1977, who was driving a DAF truck, and a Latvian citizen, born in 1956, who was driving a Volvo truck.

According to preliminary data, the trucks faced a confrontation, the most precise circumstances of the event are still being determined. The road surface, according to police, was wet but not slippery.

A lot of fuel was spilled on the road.

Due to the accident, traffic jams form at the scene, traffic in both directions is closed, so drivers on Via Baltica are offered to choose another route.

Additional. As R. Siaurusaitis, a representative of the Marijampolė County Police, in Delfi, said around 12 noon. traffic on the road has been partially renewed: one lane is allowed, traffic is regulated.
