“The crowd was fed a lie,” said an influential Kentucky leader in a speech to the Senate. “They have been provoked by the president and other powerful people.”

“They tried to use fear and violence to stop” Democrat Joe Biden’s confirmation of the Nov. 3 election victory in Congress, McConnell added.

Thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol on January 6 after a speech by the president in which he repeated his false statements that he, not Biden, had won the election.

This chaos claimed the lives of at least five people.

On January 13, the House of Representatives accused Trump of “inciting rebellion.” Now he faces a possible Senate court, even though the president’s term expires on Wednesday.

For Trump to be found guilty, 17 Republican senators would have to vote against him. McConnell did not rule out that possibility.
